and using power tools...

... Okay, so a friend called, and then I worked on my final project for art class for a little while. But you get the gist. :P

1. You chatted with the girlies and then you played with your wood?
Are you SURE you want that hanging out there for everyone to see?

Then I discovered something: only gross beer is gross. Unfortunately, here in the US, most of what you'll find on the shelves qualifies as gross beer. :P

7. I was using a dremel cutting bit in a drill press (not what it's made for, but it works)
to cut the shapes I needed in the wood. Then my dremel itself with the sanding drum to even out the cuts. And then I stained the wood.

Tomorrow I'll have to drill holes for the binding, I'm actually making a book out of wood. :P And then I'll stain the edges that I didn't get today and the drill holes. Then once I finish the artwork to put in it, I'll epoxy the 'pages' together (3 pieces of wood and two pieces of watercolor paper to make a double-sided page.), and then once that's dry I'll put a nice clear lacquer on top of everything and bind it together into book form.

I don't think anybody else put as much work into their books as I will have by the time the project's due. :P They might have put a bit more work into the actual art in the book, but not nearly as much into the book itself.

A dremel bit in a drill press!! You slay me ... You're not that dude from that New Yankee Workshop program are ya? That is resourceful to the point of painful. What the heck book are you working on - a 21st century remake of the Gutenberg Bible?

40. Hey, I gotta work with what I got.
It was either that, or use the dremel and end up with crooked lines all over the place and spend hours sanding it down into the right shape. Whereas with the drill press, I could just feed the wood in like a bandsaw. Only slower. And it created much thicker cuts, and therefore a crapload of sawdust. But more agile around the curves, so that worked for me. :)

For our final art project we have to make a storybook of some sort that tells a story without words. We're expected to destroy a regular book to make our book, I.E., paint over the pages or something like that. But I come from the kind of family that has more bookshelves than DVDs.

And I don't mean more bookshelves than DVD shelves. I mean more bookshelves than DVDs. :P

So I just couldn't bring myself to destroy a book. Even an old already mostly destroyed one. So I decided to make my own book. And since my story was about a guitar, I figured I could make the book out of wood, and have the pictures be shown through a big round hole about the size of the one on an acoustic guitar. So that's what I was doing. Cutting big holes in 11 pieces of wood.

44. Very KEWL, shoulda known you was an artist!
I've got a Dremel and know just what you mean about the crooked lines. They guy demonstrating the thing on TV musta been a friggin zombie - made it look that easy! }(

Glad you saw I was funnin ya - the project actually sounds like you're one of them overachievers who has a great respect for books AND music! You will post a pic when you're done, no? I'd love to see the finished project. (Perhaps one pre-wine and one post?)

49. Nah, I'm no artist. I just like to make stuff.
I'm just taking the class in an attempt to suck at it less. :)

I'll definitely have pictures of it before I turn it in though. I'd like to think that even though I have little artistic talent, my love of making things at least qualifies me for 'artisan' rather than 'artist' or something like that.

And I'm probably gonna start experimenting with airbrushing too (go figure that I'd try and pick it up NOW... when I just moved 1200 or so miles away from my roommate, who had an air compressor and an airbrush set. D'oh. :P ), and gonna buy me a bandsaw so I can start toying with making my own 'lectric guitars. I figure since my only artistic talents lie in music, and I like to make stuff... maybe I should think about making musical instruments. I was just at home of de pot today and I noticed that they had a nice economy (but still decent) bandsaw for only a hundred bucks. So if my first attempt at modifying/making a guitar goes well, I'll buy that bandsaw and start buying body blanks and carving my own.

28. the actual book ,
I think, is as much art as the pages inside it are, it sounds great! The way you say it, I'm totally seeing it being done, I love that kinda work.
My husband got us a dremel, I don't know what made him have to get one, he must have known I'd be the one using it. I've only used it once so far though. I need to go to the art supply store and hang around til I get an idea.

Because he had that tattooed on his hip.

Until the end, when the tattoo changed into a single face instead of the dual face.

So maybe if/when I find the right somebody I'll get a matching one on the other side of my hip of the single face.

To boost my manly cred, I waited to see Baby Mama until after I saw Iron Man!

50. Well, even for those who don't find that acting manly comes naturally to them,
you can always start somewhere simple. Like scratching inappropriate places in public. Or growing a beard*.

* If you are physically incapable of growing a beard, there's always spirit gum and facial beard wigs one can purchase at stage supply and halloween stores.

Welcome to DU, BTW. :hi:

I'm not actually a testosterone-fueled manly man, I just play one on TV. Honest.

Actually I'm a guy with longer and prettier hair than most girls, and who even at the age of 26 can barely grow a beard. I just like making fun of gender stereotypes.
