My alergies are making me angry at nature!
I don't think I've been able to wake up one day in the past two weeks with clear sinuses and to add insult to injury no matter how much I wash my car off, each morning it is still covered with a thin layer of yellow pollen.

I swear mother nature is kicking my ass right now!

1. The best thing you can do is to reduce your exposure
If you don't have central air, get a HEPA filter unit for your bedroom. If you have central air look to upgrade the filter to HEPA level. Close your windows (and use AC if you need to). In the car keep the AC on recirculate and use it instead of open windows.

You do that stuff and your allergies will be much eaiser to manage.

2. My dad refuses to put the AC on until it hits 90
Which I suppose I don't blame him because our electricity bill is crazy in the winter and summer. He uses this time of year to recover some of the losses.

I suppose I'm destined to pop Claratin like Pez and suffer :(

3. Sorry to hear that, I have pretty serious seasonal allergies

Meds helped but still left me miserable. Wasn't until I started controlling my exposure to the pollen that I was able to get things under control. Although I wonder what the cost of AC is, verse what you are paying for allergy meds

5. I guess you could always offer to kick in some $$$ toward the bill
Might get him to appreciate the situation, if nothing else.

6. I'm a life-long pollen allergy sufferer, and
when first Claritin and then Zyrtec went generic and over-the-counter, they saved me from having to choose between between incapacitating symptoms (I was capable of going through a box of tissues per day) and overwhelming drowsiness (from the older generation of antihistamines). (There was an intermediate period when I used BecoNase and NasalChrom sprays, but if I took enough to suppress my symptoms, I'd start to feel as if I'd drunk too much caffeine.)

7. Try a neti pot or a NeilMed sinus rinse bottle.
Edited on Mon May-05-08 01:22 PM by Dora
Nasal lavage will mechanically rinse the pollen and other allergens from your sinuses, and immediately reduce the severity of your symptoms. It will also flush out all the mucus.

Give it a go, it really does help. If you go outside and find yourself suffering from allergies afterwards, give your sinuses a rinse to clear out the goo. You'll feel better, I promise.

On the benefits of nasal irrigation:

NY Times even did a piece on the recent neti pot boom: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/03/fashion/03skin.html

Neilmed bottle

Oh, and Costco's generic Claritin is $8.00 or so for 180 tabs.

8. I've heard that helps...I may have to give it a try
I bet it feels kind of strange having warm water run through your sinuses

9. It takes getting used to, make sure you pour the water slowly
otherwise it finds its way to parts of your head you don't want salt water.

10. Not as much as you'd think.
The best temperature is body temp or a little warmer. I've used hotter water and found that it irritates and causes more inflammation.

I look forward to rinsing. :)

11. And Father Dodger's gonna kick your ass tonight

I can empathize about allergies, though. I used to get 'em pretty bad every spring, and all we had then was stuff like Contac that made me groggy.

Dunno what happened, but they lightened way the hell up when I was in my mid-20s. I had one "bad" day last spring, and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it used to be.

Maybe we adapt or something.

13. Oh that's right...it's time for a little payback from last year tonight
 I expect Ollie Perez to have a nice bounce back game tonight.

A few times this year when I was at work and in a bit of a pinch, I would take a couple knock-off Benadryl pills that I had in my med kit. It would clear up my itchy eyes and runny nose but I found myself nodding off at soccer practice...so it's a trade-off

15. He'd better be on
because we've been scoring runs by the trainload.

Billingsley's numbers still suck, but he was sharp against the Fish in his last start — three hits and a run with eight k's in seven innings. The start before that, he struck out 12 Snakes in six innings, but they got five runs off him.
