that doesn't sound like a good living arrangement for a cat. If there is art stuff laying around the living room, the cat WILL get into it and confining a cat to one room is far from ideal.
I have 3 cats and a roomie. And even though the roomie pretty much stays in her room most of the time, allowing the cats free run of the rest of the apartment, we still have issues. She doesn't really like them and cats do tend to get underfoot. Our situation is bad enough, and I don't have to worry about keeping them out of her things (she just shuts her bedroom door).
I'd say if you really want a cat, you need to consider other living arrangements. If you can't afford a studio apartment, honestly, you probably can't afford a cat either.
