Gamers: Help

So...I bought my XBOX 360 Elite. OK it's pretty awesome. So far I've played and finished one game: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Las Vegas. I like FPS games, so I also bought HALO 3.

Question: Do I need to have played Halo 1&2 to "get it", or can I play this standalone?

Also...what game should I get next?

1. I'm sure it'll help to play 'em

but I don't think its necessary.

It'd be kinda silly for Microsoft to make their biggest 360 title be practically unplayable by those who hadn't played the other two. :)

3. If you're in need of help understanding the plot

I'd recommend just going to wikipedia and looking up the game there. They usually have pretty good plot synopses there. :)
