69. See, you made your trips fun
My dad made trips a living hell. Every time, every single time, he took us on a road trip he would run out of gas. It's like he couldn't fill up on the way out of town. He would decide on the spur of the moment that we were going on a trip and he'd give us up to a half hour to pack.

And we didn't sing on trips because we had jobs. We spent all our energy spotting farm houses that my dad could walk to to get gas or watching for the Highway Patrol's airplane. We were like human radar/GPS devices for my parents and their speed driving. I swear one of the reasons my dad had so many kids was so he could get complete air and ground reports. We had every inch covered.

71. I think that was part two of his plan - keep the kids tired
He wouldn't let us sleep on trips. He let us go to sleep once we got to wherever we were going - which was usually grandma's house.

After mom had kids 5 and 6 the only people who got vacations were my mom and dad. Unfortunately their vacations usually resulted in another brother 9 months later. Us kids got dropped off at grandma and grandpa's for a couple of weeks every summer. It was cool though. Grandma and grandpa were great and, heck, I spent summers in Lawrence. That was pretty cool.

73. With my stepkids
I first make sure they aren't in one of their maniac phases. If they're in a maniac phase I don't allow singing because I like my ear drums just the way they are. If they aren't maniac then they have to either sing with their "indoor" volume or they walk. I don't like it when they use their Ethel Merman volume.

Why the headphone rule?

My favorite scene is at the end of "It's a Mad, Mad Mad World" when she slips and falls on her ass.

They usually had their music up too loud, so they sang too loud and way out of key.

77. The first time one of them belted out
"You'll be swell! You'll be great! Gonna have the whole world on the plate! Starting here, starting now,
honey, everything's coming up roses!" as loud as she could from the back seat (before I had coffee) on morning I about went off the road. I'm mellow in the mornings. I like to wake up slowly. I prefer listening to Morning Edition than being jolted awake by some Ethel Merman wannabe at some ghastly hour of the morning.

They also do renditions of "On the Good Ship Lollipop" replete with the tap dancing. Which, by the way, I also made them stop tap dancing on the back of my seat while I was driving.

I'm such a kill joy.

Now it makes sense. About the earphones, I mean.

82. They know the words
They know the words to a lot of musicals. They can't figure out how to use the remote control or a whole host of other practical things but they know how to sing. That isn't to say that they are particularly good at singing but they do know how to sing.

Personally I'd rather have the "This trip sucks!" over the constant, non-sensical banter I usually get. I've never seen kids be able to talk for literally hours about nothing. Their favorite topic of conversation when I'm in the car is how much more fun their mom is or what she would be doing differently.

At least your kids are your own and you can yell at them at will. I get the "you need to try harder" and the "you need to be more patient" spiels. OTOH, I've never been in the car with them since they all got put on meds for bipolar. They may be near human these days.

110. Maybe I'm the one with flashbacks
I remember tripping one time with a friend. As we crossed the bridge over the Kaw he noticed these unusual waves going across the river. Naturally we stopped and watched them for a while. Who knows how long we were standing there before we realized that it wasn't waves we were watching but shadows from the clouds passing over head.

Anyway, I was thinking about that incident and imagining what it would be like to see a line of cloth-footed cave crickets running across the room at the same time. It would be like there was a line moving across the room.

Ok, nevermind.
