I especially hope that this day, while many are celebrating their mothers because they are good and wonderful and loving, that those who had loving good mothers will be sensitive to those who had shitty mothers (or those who are mothers but find no joy in it) and not make universal statements about the "goodness" or "sacredness" or "joy" of motherhood.

And let's also be sensitive to those who want to be mothers but cannot, and all those women who for whatever reason have taken vows of celibacy but who are, in many ways, mothers to all on earth through their service to whatever religion, philosophy, or ethical calling they serve.

I think of today as the day to celebrate all the good, loving, and thoughtful women in my life, not just those who gave birth.

So to all the wonderful women in my life and around the world - cheers and thank you!!

(and let's also remember that mother's day in the US is really an anti-war day - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day_Proclamation)

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

http://www.internationalwomensday.com/about.asp

International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion
and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of
radical ideologies.

1908
Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

1909
In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

* Feminist Peace Network
* IANSA Women’s Network
* ISIS Australia
* IWD Toronto Committee
* LeicestHERday Trust UK
* Revolutionary Assoc. of Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)
* UNIFEM and Women Watch (UN)
* UNESCO
* World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts

I always thought Mother's Day was really for kids, so they could have a day to show their love for their mothers.

A :hug: to all women today!

2. Yes, but alas, no one really cares about Women's Day - no Hallmrk cards for it.
Once we can nostalgia-ize it into meaninglessness and cheap platitudinal emptiness, then America will jump on board and celebrate it.
