1. Yep, looks familiar except

ours were a kind of cobalt blue and had "bloomers" inside with elastic around the legs. Pretty
tame by today's standards. Times they do change. z

5. They were still worn into the early 70s at my grade school

By the time I got to junior high in the mid-70s, we'd switched to one-piece knit zip-up elastic-waist gym suits, blue and white striped on the top, blue on the bottom. We got sheets of letters, from which we cut out and ironed our names on the shorts.

Since it was knit, it was more comfortable, but it was still dorky as hell.

6. At my school you didn't get a choice.

You wore one or you flunked. Unless you got a medical exemption from gym. (Whoohoo for a shoulder that used to dislocate if I tried to raise my arm above my head...now I can't raise it that high so it doesn't happen any more)

You just had to bring those memories back, didn't you? I wore something like that all through Junior High, except ours were a sort of industrial blue - think janitor - and had elastic around the leg openings.

By High School the rules changed to allow us to wear shorts and a T-shirt, though both had to be fairly modest by today's standards. But those Junior High bloomers...."prime suffering years", anyone? Your body's doing weird things, and then they force you to wear something designed by Lydia Pinkham.

Ours were light blue with puffy bloomer-type shorts, not skirts. They were totally hideous.

Gods, they were awful. And it seemed that every year they changed the color to an even more repulsive one. The ones we had to wear in senior year were a particularly unlovely shade of yellow that did nothing for anybody's complexion. Ours had the elastic inner bloomers over which went the shorts. I think I need to go and have another rum and cola to restore my sanity.

none of those fancy snap crotched thingys. We called them our prison suits.

I went to a Catholic girls' high school (OH THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SCARS!)--my freshman year was '79-'80. We were told that, in addition to the hideous uniforms (pinstripe blue prison A-line dress for fall and spring, 1,000% navy blue polyester jumper for winter), we had to buy a gym suit (blue on the bottom, blue and white stripes--always the stripes!--on top, zip up the front). Then, when we started school, we found out that the PTB had decided we didn't have to buy them. Ninety-nine percent of us immediately switched to regular shorts and t-shirts, but one friend of mine was forced to wear the gym suit for ALL. FOUR. YEARS. Basically her parents figured they paid for it, she was gonna wear it. I felt SO sorry for her--and it was captured for posterity in a yearbook photo, no less.

in junior high school, that is. High school was much saner--t-shirts and shorts like the boys. I'd like that set now, actually.

16. Yes, in 7th and 8th grade in the 1960s

The seventh grade uniforms were navy blue, and the 8th grade uniforms were sea foam bluish green.

By the time I reached 9th grade, the school came to its senses and decreed that henceforth the girls' gym uniform would be a white T shirt and red shorts. (The school colors were red and white.)

Ours were purple and white, the school colors and the most unflattering things ever. I used to cringe when we had to go outdoors for phys ed where other people could see you. :scared:

19. Ours were these one piece knit things that had no buttons

so you had to get in and out of it through the neckline. By the end of October the necks were so stretched out that we had to wear t-shirts underneath. We tried to get them to change to us buying a t-shirt and shorts, but no, the boys wore that... :eyes:

We were suppose to, were told we would fail if we didn't "dress out" for gym but no way in hell I was wearing something that ugly and uncomfortable. I wore cut offs and a t-shirt. Also ended up passing because I successfully argued that I did "dress out" for gym, just refused to buy that ugly unfitting thing to do it in. :rofl: After I refused quite a few others refused too so had they failed all of us the gym teachers would of had a hell of a time explaining their failure rates. Then next year it went to shorts and t-shirts but cut offs were not allowed.

24. Yup. We had hideous red ones. And to make matters worse,

my mother made me buy one in a larger size because she said I'd grow into it. Well, I never grew into it and I spent all of my school years wearing a hideous gym suit with the extra material kinda folded downward like a flap on my waist. Then I had the good fortune of having gym class during part of the lunch hour, which meant when we had gym outdoors in the nice weather, we were in the grassy area right outside the cafeteria, where the boys would stand at the door watching us at gym. Sucked!

25. It's funny because we wore them, ugly green, but it was the one period

of the day where no one had to worry that our school clothes weren't nice enough.

I learned to sew my own clothes because my mom was going through a tough time and that's all we could afford. It was pretty nerve wracking for a 12 year old, lol, especially since Mom didn't sew and I learned it out of books. Oh my, I had me some real disasters. :)

They were blue and baggy and horrible.

The 8th and 9th graders got to wear shorts and t-shirts, but I guess the administration decided that simply being a lowly 7th grader wasn't quite demeaning enough by itself. :-)
