Poll question: Your favorite Donovan song
Too many to choose from. For me, it's especially hard to decide between "Jennifer Juniper" and "Lalena"; but the beauty of that middle-8 from "Jennifer Juniper" gets me every time.

1. I voted for "Wear Your Love Like Heaven"
It's just one of those really pretty songs that can always put me in a better mood. "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Catch the Wind" are both up there for me, too, for different reasons.

2. Yay!!!! Donovan thread!
I've gone off the deep end with him a time or two. Love so many, but Mountain, Heaven, and Babarabajagal (sp? hahaha). I even worked on a local project with some folks of nothing but Donovan covers in "electronica" settings, for lack of better term.

Museum, Fat Angel, and oh...Ferris Wheel!!!

8. Sunshine Superman!
Edited on Sun May-11-08 09:56 PM by Whoa_Nelly
(Lyrics to all Donovan songs: http://www.lyricsdownload.com/donovan-lyrics.html )

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine

I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand

9. I was gonna say 'Bubbles'
but apparently he never recorded that, rather just performed it on some teevee show (the Smothers Comedy Brothers Hour?). These are the only lyrics I remember:

We were only having a laugh
A giggle in the bubbly bath
When in came her mother and her big brother
Oh, dear me
You can't laugh here

I made a daring dash for a towel
Big brother began to growl...

So I'm goin' with this one.

(Just found out that Sammy Hagar covered Donovan twice. I knew about "Catch the Wind" but not "Young Girl Blues.")

11. Three
Superlungs My Supergirl

You see this kind of chick in every town
Whenever there's a scene she's always hanging around
She's so naïve and innocent, stares at you with awe
She's only fourteen but she knows how to draw
Supergirl, supergirl
Supergirl, supergirl
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
She never gets involved with blowing her cool
She's too busy painting sky with her classmates in school
Teachers they ignore, they would if they could
She ain't quite grown up yet but her breathin's real good
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her
Supergirl She's my supergirl and I love her

Season of the Witch

When I look out my window,
Many sights to see.
And when I look in my window,
So many different people to be
That it's strange, so strange.
You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
Mm, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch, yeah,
Must be the season of the witch.

When I look over my shoulder,
What do you think I see ?
Some other cat looking over
His shoulder at me
And he's strange, sure he's strange.
You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
Beatniks are out to make it rich,
Oh no, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch, yeah,
Must be the season of the witch.

You've got to pick up every stitch,
The rabbits running in the ditch,
Beatniks are out to make it rich,
Oh no, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch.
When I look.

When I look out my window,
What do you think I see ?
And when I look in my window,
So many different people to be
It's strange, sure it's strange.
You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
The rabbits running in the ditch,
Oh no, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch, yeah,
Must be the season of the witch.
When I look, when I look

Epistle to Dippy

Look on yonder misty mountain
See the young monk meditating rhododendron forest
Over dusty years, I ask you
What's it been like being you ?
Through all levels you've been changing
Getting a little bit better no doubt,
The doctor bit was so far out.
Looking through crystal spectacles,
I can see I had your fun.
Doing us paperback reader
Made the teacher suspicious about insanity,
Fingers always touching girl.
Through all levels you've been changing
Getting a little bit better no doubt,
The doctor bit was so far out.
Looking through all kinds of windows
I can see I had your fun.
Looking through all kinds of windows
I can see I had your fun.
Looking through crystal spectacles
I can see I had your fun.
Looking through crystal spectacles
I can see I had your fun.
Rebelling against society,
Such a tiny speculating whether to be a hip or
Skip along quite merrily.
Through all levels you've been changing
Elevator in the brain hotel
Broken down a-just as well-a
Looking through crystal spectacles,
Ah, I can see I had your fun.
Dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum

16. I voted for "Hurdy Gurdy Man" because it always enthralled me
when I heard it on the radio when I was 8.

Close second was "Atlantis" because of its place on the soundtrack of Goodfellas.

I love that song, especially the weird "blowing in an empty bottle sound" at the beginning and the fuzz.

Great way to piss your parents off in 1967 by cranking that one up on the old turnstile. My father went berserk when he heard Sgt Pepper's.

32. Love Hurdy Gurdy Man
Because it is mind-blowing and to me, so druggy. It sums up the Summer of Love when anything seemed possible.

On an extra note - I thought that we Boomers would have legalized a lot of the illicit substances from the past. Shame that many of us became right wing lunatics.

19. How in the world could you forget this one?
THE INTERGALACTIC LAXATIVE

I was impressed like everyone,
When man began to fly,
Out of earthly regions,
To planets in the sky.
With total media coverage,
We watched the heros land,
As ceremoniously
They disturbed the cosmic sand.

In awe with admiration,
We listened to the talk.
Such pride felt they,
Such joy to be
Upon the moon to walk.
My romantic vision shattered,
When it was explained to me,
Spacemen wear old diapers
In which they shit and pee.

Oh, the intergalactic laxative,
Will get you from here to there.
Relieve you and believe me,
Without a worry or care.
If shitting is your problem,
When you're out there in the stars,
Oh, the intergalactic laxative
Will get you from here to Mars.

They don't partake like you and I,
Of beefy burger mush.
Their food is specially prepared
To dissolve into slush.
Absorbed by multi-fibers
In the super diaper suit,
Otherwise the slush would trickle
Down inside the boot.

The Intergalactic Laxative

20. "Catch the Wind," but only the simple acoustic version.
I had a vinyl album eons ago that contained early Donovan, things like "The Ballad of Geraldine" and "Universal Soldier," plus "Dona Dona Dona" and a very simple setting of "Catch the Wind." When I bought a best-of tape years later, I was annoyed at the overproduced version of "Catch the Wind." Keep it simple, D.L.!

22. Widow with a Shawl A Portrait

Dear Wind that shakes the barley free
Blow home my true love's ship to me, fill the sail
I a-weary wait upon the shore.

Forsake her not in times of storm
Protect her oaken beams from harm, fill her sail
I a-weary wait upon the shore.

Whither he be in Africa
or deep asleep in India, fill his dreams
I a-weary wait upon the shore.

Dear snow white gulls upon the wave
I, like you, am lamenting, for my love.
I a-weary cry upon the shore.

And in my chariot of sleep,
I ride the vast and dreamy deep deep sea.
I awake a-weary on the shore.

Seven years and Seven days,
no man has seen my woman ways, dear God.
I a-weary cry upon the shore.

Along the shingled beach I go
The wind about me as I make my way
to my weary dream upon my bed.

Dear Wind that shakes the barley free
Blow home my true love's ship to me, fill the sail.
I a-weary wait upon the shore.

30. Re: Mellow yellow
Edited on Mon May-12-08 11:42 AM by LibDemAlways
When I was a high school freshman someone came on campus over a weekend and painted a colorful
"electrical banana" over the entrance to the cafeteria. It was a large yellow banana with an electrical cord attached and was very well done.

The kids loved it. The administrators didn't. It was painted over by lunchtime.

My choice, however, is "Catch the Wind."
