RISK!
I just played for the first time in 20 years.

The game is really fun- very easy to play but actually pretty deep...

Any RISK! enthusists out there in Lounge-Land?

my friend and I used to enjoy a little herb and Risk until dawn. Once you start a game, you have to finish it, no matter what it takes!

3. Nobody will play me
anymore because I always win. It's actually pretty simple, I figured out a method by playing vs a bunch of computer generated opponents. The trick is in the cards.

5. I'm a huge Risk fan
I was just thinking of buying it when I was at the store the other day. Every place that I move, I seem to end up buying a copy of it. I think I have one or two left at a friend's house in Chicago, maybe one in California, and at least two at my parents' house in Michigan. I haven't played in a few years though. I need to get that shit together over here soon.

6. If that's you in the pic, then, yes, I love Risk! It's part of my life.
I have a whole house full of Risk related stuff. But, I'm also into other stuff, like the stuff you're into. Totally.

Seriously, though, yes - I love Risk! I haven't played in a long time, but we played a lot in college in the late 80s. Then we got into Supremacy, and the Risk playing died out except every now and again.

We did have a fun rule in playing risk, in that if a person rolled 3 6's, that was "nuclear annihilation!", and destroyed the entirety of the opposing forces; and if a person rolled 3 1's, that was a "Chernobyl!", and the roller's forces were all lost.

7. Meh. It's pointless. He who rules Australia wins the game.
In college, we had mad, 10-hour sessions of that game, fueled by terible drugs and Beethoven cranked up to 11. Almost invariably, the damned Aussie would wind up winning. It got to the point where we had what we caled "Atlantis Rules" -- Australia has sunk beneath the waves, and must be ignored for the duration of the game. It worked out surprisingly well.

22. Here's another one, courtesy of Eddie Izzard's
Dress to Kill :)

And the German empire, very organized, they’d always build an empire, “ein, zwei, ein, zwei, “build an empire, very Prussian, and then they'd celebrate with a World War! And then lose the whole fucking empire by the end of the war. In the 30s, Hitler, Czechoslovakia, Poland, France, World War II... the Russian front, not a good idea...! Hitler never played “Risk” when he was a kid...! ‘Cause, you know, playing “Risk,” you could never hold on to Asia. That Asian-Eastern European area, you could never hold it, could you? Seven extra men at the beginning of every go, but you couldn't fucking hold it! Australasia, that was the one! Australasia, all the purple ones! Get everyone on Papua New Guinea and just build up and build up...

Risk was fun, but I always had more fun with this one:

Nuclear War

37. I wonder if the game could be improved
by taking a magic marker and either

1) adding a connection from Australia to say, South America. SA's points would have to be increased now that it has three connections.

2) adding Anarctica which would connect to SA, Africa and Australia.

40. In college we made our own boards
For our "continents" and "territories" we had:
  • Greeks (made up of individual houses)
  • Dormies (individual halls)
  • Off campus apartments
  • Campus (libraries, labs, various buildings)
  • Jocks (gyms, arenas, stadia)
  • Admin (various admin buildings)
  • Downtown (stores, pubs, restaurants)
Yeah, we were nerds...

20. That is my strategery against the computer
Edited on Tue May-13-08 12:55 PM by pokerfan
First Australia to gain the two bonus armies per turn advantage.

Then Asia. Once Asia is taken, it and Australia can be defended with just three territories: Ukraine, the Middle East and Kamchatka.

Then I launch a fourth, expeditionary force somewhere in North America and ultimately capture Greenland. Then, while holding Greenland, I use my Kamchatkan army to sweep through all of North America, eventually holding at Mexico.

I now hold three continents worth 18 bonus armies per turn and are dfending on just four fronts: Ukraine, the Middle East, Mexico and Greenland. At this point, I don't even need cards. I can collect my 21 armies per turn, mock my enemies and gloat for a few rounds.

South America is next to fall; Europe and Africa are last.

But the key is taking Asia (especially the Ukraine) as quickly and as early as possible. If you can't manage that, you are srewn. But if you can, you will find it is a "piece of pie."

29. Strategy
Edited on Tue May-13-08 01:44 PM by Rhansen
If you play your CARDS right there is no need to even hold a continent (though it helps), the entire board can usually be taken in one or two turns (after the cards are right, usually 10-12 turns to finish a game). The key is in the cards.

Although I did end up winning a game as the Axis where the USA got Heavy bombers early on (IWe won because the guy playing the USA was a moron.)

23. Revised edition.
The breakup of the Eastern Front makes things go a lot more quicker, and the two new units (Artillery and destroyers) are a OK, although I do miss the cheaper units tech (Replaced with "Combined bombardment")

Only major complaint is that the board's too small.

27. Try Axis and Allies and Shots...
It's the same as A&A, but every time you lose an infantry unit, you have to take a chug of beer. Lose any other type of unit, and you have to take a shot of liquor.

I'd tell you about our Advanced Squad Leader w/ Beer games, but we've never gotten past turn two... :P

13. I love it, but no one wants to play - too long
I'll check out the Conquest game.

Funny aside: shortest game of Risk I've ever played! I was visiting some friends, and the guy of the couple wanted to play Risk but his wife did not. He kept badgering her to play, so finally she agreed just so he would shut up. She did not care if she lost since she wanted out of the game anyway, so did little for a turn or two, got sick of it, and started attacking us, especially since we had weakened each other a little already.

It was a maelstrom of hilarity - she wiped us out completely with no effort, leaving only one piece behind in each country, and the game was over in less than an hour!

Lesson learned.

You get 3 missions that you have to complete as opposed to world domination...apparently Mission Risk! has been part of the European releases of the game for decades...I have not tried it yet but it looks fun...
