Pinched nerve in arm...Help!!
How do you make it feel better?

Does the pain go away?

My left arm is useless...right at the beginning of gardening season.

Can't get in to see the orthopedic doc until the end of the month.

Hurts so bad I want to kill someone...but that's kind of hard to do with only one arm.

Other than that...life is pretty good...I just want to get out there and do some gardening!

Good morning all!

(Mods...not looking for medical advice per se, just some advice from people who have had this and what they did until they could get into the doc.)

1. Best thing would probably be
(outside of the doc of course) get a massage of some sort. Massages can be therapeutic if you find a professional who knows what they are doing. Meantime I would try some advil.....

2. Thank you...
I'm going to stay away from any type of massage until I know exactly what the hell this is.

I will try the advil.

Should I just tape a few tablets to my arm? Errrr...how does that work exactly? :hide: :hi:

3. My younger sister had a trapped nerve and had surgery for it, which helped her a lot.

Don't know if that's your problem, but if so, I hope you have insurance.

9. Thanks raccoon....
We'll see what the doc says...he's a pain management guy, but not a surgeon. Starting with him.

5. a few ideas
I had something like this happen to me last fall after raking leaves. No insurance here, so I just had to treat it myself and it eventually did go away but it took a long time. I did a lot of research on the internet and went to a symptom finder. It could have been bursitis but I don't really know. Anyway, after it went away (took about four months to even start to get better), I started working out with weights--an overall resistance training routine. Now I can get away with about anything.

I suggest icing it down and completely abandoning the activity that caused it. My husband had to rake the rest of the leaves last fall.

What makes you sure it's a pinched nerve?

I've had pinched nerves in my neck before and I've found that stretching the muscle alleviates the pain because it's the swollen, inflamed muscle that is impinging on the nerve. Anything you can do to bring down the inflammation will no doubt help the pain if it is indeed a pinched nerve.

To keep it from happening again, you might need a regular stretch routine and of course, a weight resistance training session twice a week will do wonders for your gardening capabilities!

10. My FNP said...
It was either tendinitis, or a pinched nerve.

I have degenerative disk disease, but never had symptoms this high up.

Diminished grip in left hand, occasional feeling of paralysis, severe pain in arm, pain in back of neck with deep breaths...all the normal crap.

7. Need more info.
Why do you think it is a pinched nerve? Do or did you have tingling in the extremity as well?

You say you cannot use the arm; is it actually “frozen”? Because of the other things you have shared with us; I want to know which joint?

11. Left arm, 6 inches either side of the elbow, sometimes...
radiating to hand. Fingers freeze and shake in splayed position occasionally.

I don't think it is diabetic neuropathy, since that usually starts in area furthest away from heart and works up.

I work like a maniac...I'm pretty sure it is a disk pressing on a nerve...I can just kind of "tell".

I'm not all that worried...whatever it is I will get it fixed....I just need some home remedies for pain relief until I can get into see the ortho. :hi:

13. I agree with the suggestions above.
However, it sounds like you may have two things going on, the disc degeneration and tennis elbow.

So ice on the elbow and Advil or other anti-inflammatory for inflammation.

You mentioned your kidneys before; drink plenty of water with any anti-inflammatory.

I agree about it not sounding like neuropathy. I was concerned about frozen shoulder.

 Take care, go easy on yourself. Do not do those things that cause pain, you could be doing more damage.
