Edited on Tue May-13-08 10:25 AM by Blue-Jay
Not a "problem" really, but there's some kind of pit-looking dog in my front yard. She's roaming the neighborhood, and I can't figure out what I should do.

She looks a little skinny but not emaciated, and is wearing a collar with a tag on it. I've given her some food and water, but she (so far) isn't trusting enough to get close enough for me to check her ID tag.

I *think* I can lure her into my fenced back yard with a food-trail, but then what do I do? Call Animal Control?

1. A pitbull? They're very sweet and gentle.
I would go outside and try to kiss it.

:hide:

Of course, you realize I'm kidding, right J?

2. She's not feeling very "kissy" right now, I don't think.

3. *live update w/ pics*
Great. Now that I fed her, she's in the front yard barking her head off. Still won't let me come near her, though.

4. Name her Lassie
and follow her. She might take you to some lost kittens...

14. She is lost.
And does it look like she recently had pups? Go to craigslist in your city; see if someone is looking for her. Post her picture in the lost pets and animals categories on craigslist, change to post a bit so it will cross post. Give her more food and water, use it to try to get her into the backyard.

5. If she doesn't let you near her to check her tag,
call animal control. I'm sure she's harmless, but let her warm up to you on her own terms. You never know.

11. Seconded.
If she's that spooked she's best picked up by AC. Something's quite amiss, her condition, severe shyness, and extreme close ear-crop bespeak less-than-optimal ownership conditions, if you will pardon my euphemisms. She may or may not warm up, she could be in an overstimulated mode due to unfamiliar surroundings; however, I generally consider an excessively-shy Pit Bull to be suspect as far as soundness of temperament goes. Call AC while she's still in your yard.

13. Her ears weren't cropped.
And she didn't have any tell-tale scars, so I don't think anyone has used her as a fighter.

18. Ah...must have been the angle
Thought it looked like a close crop in the pics. On closer viewing, it's ears-against-head...I need new glasses...

8. First, I'm going to need to find a baby.
Will a kindergartener do? I can probably snatch one from the nearest school. (I have access to a van and some candy...)

9. Try to find one that is in Pre-K, so you don't strain your neck.
And, if they're crying, all the better.

10. Oh, if there's a kindergarten nearby
problem solved. She'll head over there when she hears the school bell.

12. Aw, nevermind. She ran off.
She was too smart to fall for my back yard trap. I called animal control, but they didn't seem to give a shit. Maybe she went home.

16. Sorry I missed the action.
You did have the right idea, though. Not approaching, rather somehow getting her into your back yard and then calling animal control. She's got tags, so hopefully she went home.

17. Yeah, it's too bad she buggered off.
She didn't seem to be aggressive, just scared and hungry. Poor thing.
