9. Review of last night's show:
Edited on Thu May-15-08 08:08 AM by Bennyboy
From www.philzone.com

Aoxomoxoa for the 1st set, no special guests
Live Dead for the 2nd set, with Mark Karan on lead guitar

I'll give the 1st set a 7. It could easily have been an 8, maybe even an 8.5 if they'd only turned up the volume. As it was, from where I stood near the back of the orchestra pit (40 feet back from dead center), the beginning of Rosemary and most of Baby was nearly drowned out by the crowd murmur. It was muddy and maddening.

Other than that (significant) problem, however, the set was nicely rendered by the band. Except where noted, the songs were played w/o any long breaks or jams, so it went by quick.

St. Stephen - vox by Phil
Dupree's - vox by Jackie
Rosemary - vox by Teresa Williams from the side balcony
Rag - vox by Molitz
Mtns - vox by Phil and w/ a nice jam in the middle
Jam
Chinacat - vox by Jackie and w/ a nice call and response jam between Larry and Jackie
Baby - vox by Phil and Teresa, alternating verses
Cosmic - vox by band

As for the 2nd set, from the very first notes out of Karan's guitar, I could tell this set was going to be much louder and very electric. I have to give the first half of the set an 11 and the second half a 10. The Dark Star was sick, long and varied, and wild, with segments that boogied and stomped alternating with trickly space segments. They went out into space and back into dance mode so many times that I began to wonder if they were going to skip the second Stephen and go straight into The Eleven. The Dark Star felt like it must have been 40 minutes long! What followed was one of the most thunderous, monstrous, pounding Stephens I have ever heard. Zoiks!

Dark Star, v1-> - vox by Phil
Skipping on the Atmosphere Jam-> (my title - in and out of space, get it?)
Dark Star, v2-> - vox by Phil
St. Stephen - vox by Karan (and holy shit was this hugely different than the first set version)
Jam->
The Eleven - vox by Molitz
Lovelight - vox by Karan
Death Don't - vox by Jackie
Feedback
Goodnite - vox by band

enc: King Bee - vox by Jackie

12. I bet this is about the upcoming tour
So that the band gets all the songs worked in so they can have a lof of different setlists. On the last tour that could only do two and half shows worth, so this way they can really bust some stuff out....

As soon as I see these on the interwebs I wll be putting them up here...

From Phil Zone: (DN= David Nelson) TW= Teresa Williams (Larry Campbell's wife)JG=Jackie Green

+Till the Morning Comes - vox by TW

enc:
+Attics - vox by TW, PL and LC w/LC on guitar and no other instruments
*Truckin - vox by JG and band

It was all good tonight, folks. The first set was absolutely smoking with a hot, snaky Speedway and a sizzling, dizzying Cumberland. Vocals were breathtaking at times with just a few weak spots (Easy Wind). Phil sang as good as I've ever heard him and was impressive on Peter and Operator.

In the second act, the whole set was a grin-inducing treat with a monster Sugar Mag, a tender Brokedown and perhaps the best version ever of Attics. Truckin was the perfect way to send us out the door.

Saturday night was Grateful Dead (Skull Fuck) and Dead Set.
There was NO Weir.

There WERE three sets.

The guest guitar player was Henry Kaiser and on the talking drum Sikiru.

Set 1:
Bertha
Mama Tried
Big Railroad Blues
Playing In The Band
The Other One
Me & My Uncle
Big Boss Man
Me & Bobby McGee
Johnny B. Goode
Wharf Rat
Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad

set 2 (dead set)
Samson and Delilah
Friend Of The Devil
New Minglewood Blues
Deal
Candyman
Little Red Rooster
Loser
Passenger
Feel Like A Stranger
Franklin's Tower

Set 3: (W/ Henry Kaiser)
Rhythm Devils (sikiru on talking drum, started as a duet with John Molo--eventually became the full band plus Kaiser)
Fire On The Mountain
Greatest Story Ever Told

19. It's a legacy that needs to be kept alive...
...I remember when Cheap Trick did their "Music For Hangovers" shows in 1999. Four nights, their first four albums, one per night. Fans went apeshit.

The Dead was never a "singles band," no matter how badly Warners or Arista might have wanted it. The "let's play the whole album" approach seems like it would work really well for them.

23. Last Night Set List.......
From PhilZone:

My notes....

No albums tonight. And while the ushers last night told us they'd play 'til 4am, they only played 'til 3:30. Hah!

Electric Set 1: (Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, John Molo)

# Come Together >
# Jam >
# Dark Star >
# Loose Lucy
# West LA Fadeaway
# The Wheel >
# Not Fade Away

Jeff Chimenti and then Larry Campbell joined in the middle of West LA Fadeaway, and then played the rest of the set

The Come Together > Dark Star > Loose Lucy jam played by Bob, Phil, and John lasted around 40 minutes (Dark Star lasted 20+ minutes). Because they were in a smaller vessel, they were able to go deeper into space during Dark Star than on Wednesday. The West LA Fadeaway was a very nice slow bluesy version, quite nice. The whole set was around 90 minutes I think. Seeing just Bob and Phil play like that was truly special.

=====

Acoustic Set 1: (Larry Campbell and Jackie Greene)

# Your Last Letter ?
# Sing Me Back Home
# Deep Elem Blues
# Instrumental ?
# Warfield Waltz
# Please Come Home ?
# Goodnight Irene ?

I didn't recongize several of these songs. Larry played all sorts of instruments. It was sweet and pretty short....

=====

Electric Set 2: (Phil and Friends)

# Shakedown Street >
# Ball and Chain
# Big River
# Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo >
# Jam >
# Althea
# Mexican Girl
# Stella Blue (Instrumental) >
# Sugaree

Mark Karan joined at Mississippi Half-Step and played for the rest of the set.

Ball and Chain and Mexican Girl were the first Jackie songs we heard, both were very well played, concise, rollicking songs. Mark and Larry shared some incredible intertwined guitar work throughout the Half-Step > Althea. Stella Blue was very unusual and beautiful, Larry's pedal steel took the place of the vocal lead. The Sugaree rocked.

=====

Acoustic Set 2: (Jackie Greene and Tim Bluhm)

# Spider John
# ? (last goodbye?)
# ? (squeek wheel?)

Jackie and Tim sing together in a band called the "Skinny Singers". Tim is a good guitarist, their voices sound good together. The songs have catchy tunes and quirky lyrics. Tim's wife Mickey sang harmony on the third tune.

=====

Electric Set 3: (Phil and Friends)

# Sugar Magnolia >
# Sunshine Daydream
# Unbroken Chain >
# Jam >
# Mountains Of The Moon >
# Jam >
# Terrapin Station >
# I Know You Rider

A couple thousand balloons fell from the ceiling at the beginning of Sugar Magnolia, which rocked. There was also a giant mirror ball above the stage. The Unbroken Chain had a rocking jam part but was fairly slow in the verses, and then the Mountains was beautiful, but darn for an old man those slow songs at 2:30am ar tough. They must have known -- the Terrapin was very interesting, fast and intricate, and the Rider closer was very rowdy.

=====

Encore: (Phil and Friends w/ Mark Karan)

# Donor Rap
# Truckin >
# And We Bid You Good Night

Good Truckin', but I think everyone was tired....
