arghh .. It doesn't rain but it pours. Serious Good Vibes Needed
Edited on Wed May-14-08 03:40 PM by auntAgonist
I was laid off work a week ago, no biggie, I'm supposed to go back on the 19th of May.

I have a horrendous cold and I hate being sick ...

But .. the worst

Today, the nursing/retirement home where my father is had a major fire. 1 dear woman is in critical condition in the hospital and 11 others including my Dad are hospitalized with smoke inhalation. The fire happened in the suite next to my Dad's he was napping at the time. Had my Dad not heard the fire alarm I shudder to think what might have happened. Firefighters and area residents rescued the people from the nursing home, many of them too frail to get out on their own.

My minute issues pale in comparison to what these poor people are going through. Some good thoughts please for ALL of them. My Dad will be ok. My sister is there with him now. (Niagara Falls Ontario. The Cavendish Manor) Healing thoughts for the critically injured lady and calming thoughts for the displaced residents ... I can't imagine how frightened they must have been.

thanks DU.

7. He's pretty shook up but otherwise
doing ok. As well as can be expected he's 83 and had a stroke in mid April, that's why he is in the nursing home to start with :(

I feel so bad for all of these elderly folk. My sister says it's chaos there right now. They are trying to place everyone in other nursing homes for the time being.

thanks Midlodemocrat.

Last I heard the woman is still in critical condition. The 10 others have smoke inhalation and are being treated at area hospitals.

18. thanks kagehime

I am sure he'll be fine. It's going to take him a while to settle down. I worry for the lady who was injured though. I can't seem to find out any information about her.

All of the residents have been placed in neighbouring nursing homes temporarily until the damage is assessed and repaired.

thanks again :pals:

21. I'm sorry aA

My mother was a director of nurses at a nursing home when I was in HS. I remember getting the call that the alarms were going off at the home one Sunday. My mother and I got into the car and happened to follow the fire department to the facility. My mother was reprimanded by the fire department for following the engine, but she didn't care. We wanted to get the patients out and because it was winter, get them covered with blankets. Turned out to be a faulty sensor, but we had no way of knowing.

My prayers go out to the residents and to your Dad.

http://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1028309&auth=COREY+LAROCQUE%3b+JENNIFER+PELLEGRINI

There is still no word on the person critically injured.

My Dad seems to be ok and for that we are eternally grateful.

The staff and rescue workers were phenomenal.

thanks to all of you for your good wishes.

29. That's terrible
My grandmother died in a fire when I was 2, and I never really knew her. So it makes me feel bad - I hope that the critical woman recovers, but also that her grandchildren got to know her.

It's so dangerous, with the oxygen tanks and everything. They don't give a cause, but I wonder if it was smoking? That's what killed my grandmother - smoking in bed.

30. I'm sorry for your loss Lisa. One of the first
thoughts I had was that it was caused by smoking. I don't think there is ANY smoking allowed in the building at all. I haven't heard the fire marshall's report, not sure if they are even done investigating. I worried about the oxygen tanks .. so many thoughts run through your mind.
