4. FANTASTIC!!!! What a great day!
This will mobilize the brain dead bigots...but fuck them. Schwartzenegger said that he would oppose any anti-gay consitutional amendment in California.

This is truly an historic day!

8. They're already mobilized
They've been circulating petitions for a November ballot measure to amend the state constitution in anticipation of this.

If they get it on the ballot, I promise you I'll work to keep it from passing.

13. Thanks!
Yeah, I'm sure Randy Thomasson and his ilk are already mobilized. But California is NOT, thankfully, Idaho or Texas...I think there's a very good chance this will stay...and there will be legal same-sex marriage in California. This really is big news. :-)

The national Supreme Court.

Call me a pessimist, but that's what will happen.

24. I wouldn't put it past them...
but I hope others would see it that way. I hope the 14th gets involved, too. Should be legal everywhere, not just in California.

31. You do understand the process doesn't work like that, don't you?
The appeal process is rather lengthy; it'll take months or even a year or two before anything happens on the SCOTUS level.

36. Won't happen.
First of all, it can't be appealed to the US Supreme Court in a week. It takes years.

Secondly, the opinion (all 172 pages of it) specifically focus on the CALIFORNIA constitution. I haven't read the entire thing yet, but from what I can tell, the CA Supreme Court based their decision solely on defining the rights that are granted to the citizens of CA under our state constitution. The federal constitution hasn't even been mentioned, so far as I've read.

The United States Supreme Court doesn't have jurisdiction in a case where a state supreme court is interpreting only state law.

:woohoo:

(of course, this doesn't stop the citizens of CA from trying to overturn it themselves)

25. Why? That didn't happen in MA...
And, yeah, I think the Constitution kinda overrules that.
