I am in glasses hell!

The hellacious saga...

2 weeks ago my glasses broke. I bumped up an ophthamologist appt to the next day and deployed superglue to tide me over. The tech didn't do a full refractory test, rather, she checked my existing prescription, noted it corrected my eyes to better than 20/20, and I saw the ophthamologist to examine an old scar on my left retina.

I shoot over to LensCrafters, pick a pair of Nike 4008 Flexon frames (the better to withstand assaults from my two year old), two hours later I have new glasses. But...I start getting massive eye fatigue when using large computer monitors, headaches, and the frames are on the small side and they're pissing me off. I think there's something screwy with the lenses.

Now, I have 2 weeks to fix this during which I can return the glasses free & clear. LensCrafters doesn't have the slightly larger frames (4006) that would fit me better and they adamantly do not order anything. I get 35% off due to my health plan with them. Up the street a store will order anything I want from anywhere, they stock all Nike frames, but it'll cost me a pretty penny. Oh, and since I didn't REALLY get a proper eye exam I need to rush a visit to an optometrist before I can get new lenses ordered. Argh.

What to do...I am too blind to go without. What a pain in the ass. Next time I come across $5,000 and don't know what to do with it, I'm getting laser eye surgery. Which would be never.

Good night. Thanks for listening.

3. in my experience...
... whoever it is that grinds the lenses for the eye doctor that I go to somehow does a much better job than any of the places like lens crafters. It's more expensive, but I wear my glasses all day everyday, so it's worth it. I haven't bought new frames in many years... I'd like to, because these have taken a good beating, but I'm super picky and can't find any that I like.

4. Tried Zenni Optical?
www.zennioptical.com - home of $8 glasses?

My wife was having a time with some glasses she got from Lenscrafters herself - the lenses kept getting scratched easily and proved annoying and distracting. She learned of this website, was a bit skeptical, but $8 for a pair of glasses is almost nothing really, so she ordered two pair and was delighted with them, and the lenses she got were not as prone to scratching as her more expensive Lenscrafters ones. Even though the glasses are quite rugged my 5 year old son still managed to break a pair, so to overcome that problem my wife just bought 3 more pairs.

You'll still need a prescription for the lenses though.

Just a thought.

7. I got a pair of shades from them...
just to see if they were for real. Damn, the glasses are perfect!

The 8 buck frame does seem a little fragile, but at that price who cares.

6. I'm guessing they screwed up the IPD...
that's interpupilary distance, or the distance between the centers of the pupils. Gotta have that right or you're looking through the cockeyed edge of the lens, not the optical center and you will go nuts trying to see straight.

I just got a pair from Zenni-- aviator shades in my prescription for a total of 18 bucks including shipping, and I like them better than my regular glasses. Getting another cataract operation next month and will then order lots more from them.

Personally, I miss the disposable contacts I was using for years. I might go back to them when all the eye surgery is over.

9. something could be wrong
with the lenses.
My sister in law kept going back to the glasses place and telling them something was wrong with her new glasses. They kept saying that she just needed to get used to them. Finally they checked the lenses and they had reversed the lenses.
Stuff can go wrong.

11. I have re-visited the eye doc
I have a new prescription. My right eye corrects to just shy of 20/10, my left to a bit better than 20/15.

Now I just need new frames to go with the new prescription. I have a pair of Nike frames with Flexon sides that are nice - see the picture above with the oval lenses. They need to have wider lenses though, these are just at the minimum I can get away with. The frames need to be rugged to survive my 2 year old's assaults.

Sticking with flexon and the temple-gripping ears, I am considering two other Nike frames:
4012:

and 4105:

Any opinions are most welcome. I'm also going to buy a spare pair for the glovebox from Zenni Optical :)
