Does anyone else get Vegemite cravings?
I was in New Zealand for maybe two weeks years ago, had maybe two vegemite sandwiches in that time, and yet I still get these weird cravings for that salty beer-flavored peanut butter they serve there. I'm going to have to hit Schnucks and that world market store tomorrow to see if they sell it.

Anyone else strangely addicted?

6. If you fancy Bird's

this company is in PA.

I buy it when I'm in Ontario Canada visiting family. Although I do think I've seen it at the local Meijer store. I'll have to check.

:hi:

2. It's unpatriotic of me ....
... as Vegemite is an Australian invention; but I'm not fond of Vegemite sandwiches, not on its own with butter anyway. Peanut butter and Vegemite is rather nice, though, and a smear on baked pumpkin or carrots is yummy; and I often put a dollop in a beef or kangaroo stew instead of salt or Wocestershire or soya sauce.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite

I was given a cat called Vegemite a few years ago -- she was tortoiseshell and white and the pattern on her fur did sugggest Vegemite smeared on toast: full marks to whoever named her. She came from an old people's home where she had worked for 10 years and which was being closed down, and I only had her for about two years. I adored Veggie and was heartbroken when she died.

8. Peanut Butter and Vegemite?
I mean, hell, I'm shocked you antipodeans have that cornerstone of American cuisine, but that sounds vile.

15. Of course we have peanut butter!
In my family we've had it for generations. My grandfather was one of the first farmers to grow peanuts in the Kingaroy district of Queensland (where they are still a major crop) and I remember Grandma making her own peanut paste (as Queenslanders call it) by feeding peanuts through the mincer. She'd then add sugar and salt to taste, and use raw or roasted peanuts according to her mood. You can do the saame with cashews, and cashew butter is very nice.

If you're making peanut butter and vegemite on toast the rule is to be generous with the peanut butter and very sparing with the vegemite. A light hand is the rule with vegemite generally; the taste is so very strong and salty that it can easily swamp what you put with it.

10. G'day!! I've never had vegemite...a good friend of mine from high school, who is
part Australian has told me about it...I am still not sure what it would be like, but I am open-minded when it comes to food, so I would most definitely like to try it! Where do you suggest the easiest place I could pick some up to try in the states?

14. Here's a place you can get some on-line
They're in San Antonio, Texas

http://about-australia-shop.com/index.php

The 5oz jar should be enough to try it out, but it does keep for years even after the jar's been opened. The salt (some 10%) preserves it.

Here's a page explaining how to make vegemite on toast, complete with pictures:

9. You know what apple butter is, right?
Imagine apple butter made with beer, then liberally salted. It's yeast paste, salty like nothing else, and strangely delicious.
