2. Hmmmm....
famous gay people portraits on the walls? Maybe movie posters of gay-themed movies such as Brokeback Mountain and Love! Valor! Compassion!?

His-his and hers-hers wedding cake toppers as table decorations?

10. Then it's a violation of the sexual harassment policy
Edited on Fri May-16-08 01:33 PM by TrogL
I'm serious. Check it out. I'll bet it says no mention of sexual orientation (ie. "gay") in the workplace.

Hence a "gay themed" office party is in violation.

If your office doesn't have a sexual harassment policy it needs one or might even be in violation of the law.

15. never heard of such a thing
A work function with a sexual orientation theme? An orientation that is broadly and wrongfully made the subject of ridicule in public culture? In consideration of my gay friends, I find myself horrified.

Just my opinion. I know you didn't ask for people's opinions, just party hints.

I can already tell by the suggestions on this thread. What people think of when they think "gay themed" is .... bizarre.

22. How about a party to CELEBRATE gay people? This is the difficulty in our minority being defined by
"sex." It's not a Sexual orientation-themed party, it's a civil rights/celebration party. Think of it that way.

I'm gay and I'm not horrified. I'd be thrilled if someone put together a gay-themed office party in a sensitive and respectful manner in the way it seems that lioness is doing.

Really, this is grossly inappropriate. Especially for a workplace.

24. So you think the only way to have an AA-themed party is using watermelon and fried chicken??
Well, yeah, something bigoted like that would be a really awful idea. But one that celebrates civil rights achievements by black Americans, that would be very appropriate.

Why on earth couldn't there be a gay-themed party that celebrates gay people and gay rights and recognizes the achievements of gay people?

25. i think a lot of liberals think that 'normalizing us' is doing us a favor
pretending we are no different, but we are different. we have a culture and a difference in sexual orientation. i dont see why this cannot be recognized and honored in terms of diversity

pretending color blindness and sexual orientation and gender blindness really doesnt is essentially just pretense.

30. That's just stupid
There's nothing inappropriate at all in celebrating a culture.

Ever had a Cinco de Mayo celebration at work? I have. Is that inherently offensive?

Most of the Gay people I know/have known are indistinguishable from everyone else except for their orientation.

I hope I see the day when Gay is as boring as Straight, if you get my drift.

19. 1890's-style
gilded-age dress and mannerisms, big hats, ballroom skirts, men in suits. I know you meant homosexual, not the gay nineties...but this is a much better idea.

I would so go to a steampunk-themed cocktail party.

If you know the people and you have a gay friendly workplace, why not? Maybe not a gay theme, but have music you normally hear in a gay bar and great food. Maybe a few rainbow flags. Have fun.

29. That is really cool that you can have a Pride event at work.
I think that might be a good theme in itself.

How far we have come, that we can now so casually have talk about Pride and accept it in the workplace.

From criminalized to normalized. That is the goal, afterall. It's not so much a visual theme as one for initial discussion. :)

some old pics of the Stonewall confrontation? That would be kinda cool, even if old black and whites. I mean, that is the beginning of the struggle, ya know? The drag queens taking on the cops. Those pics still give me chills and I was only 11 at the time.

How the hell are ya anyway? Been ages since I stopped in.:hi:

37. Amy Sedaris could answer that question.
If you haven't read her book: I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence , you should ! It is fantastic. She doesn't have a chapter for gay themed parties, but I will bet she could come up with some. Her comedy career was inspired by her gay brother.

You should Email her for some ideas.
