I swear I am NEVER paying retail AGAIN!!
:bounce:

It took me long enough but I finally went to Goodwill to purchase a few pairs of jeans (I've gained some weight since Debi, Jr.'s graduation and need some larger sizes).

WOW! The only reason I stopped buying stuff was because I couldn't carry any more cloths (and I spent what it would have cost me to buy 2 pairs of jeans!).

Now I need to clean out my closet (again) and send my stuff to Goodwill.

I know I'll be back!!!

So, why didn't I do it sooner?????

1. I have good luck at one of the local thrifts with Hawaiian print shirts.
Most aren't real Hawaiian shirts, but they're tropical prints in either all cotton or silk and I haven't paid more than $8 for any of them. I've also found brand new jeans. Why pay retail when there's good stuff cheap down the street?

2. I'm going back to look for work clothes (skirts/slacks/jackets)
Everything in the clothing department was priced at $3.95 a piece (except for the stuff that was ON SALE!)

:banghead: WHY didn't I go sooner??

3. Years ago, there would only be maybe 3 cars in the Goodwill lot
Nowadays, people are fighting over spaces, and you would not believe how busy the store is!

Right now though, I don't have money to spend on clothing anyway.

But I certainly have found some great deals over the years!

12. I just cleared out Debi Jr.'s drawers of t-shirt/polos/shorts that can go
to Goodwill. It'll give me an excuse to go back! :P

4. Never buy anything new but food! That's my motto!
I got one of these babies at a church rummage sale for $2.00 just a week ago.

It works great! Just used it to open a stubborn pickle jar.

I buy nearly all my clothes at thrift shops.

6. oh... so you need NEW food...
latte drinking, elitist liberal snob. Enjoy your Muslim president, traitor. Why do you hate America? Why do you have the food that America has already deemed good enough to eat? It's not good enough for you? I bet you drive a prius.

I told Mr. Debi now I know how the 'people with money' in our town KEEP their money! (yes, there were plent of nice newer cars in the parking lot)

5. it is so much more than clothes...
you want an exercise machine? heh.

a bread maker. a crockpot.

just about anything!

don't get me wrong... bread makers and crockpots are wonderful inventions, very useful inventions, that most people tire of so quickly and that you can pick up in a thrift store or a yard sale almost brand new. for almost nothing.

want to get in shape? a treadmill can be yours for pennies.

the op is a genius...

11. I got 2 India-print cotton skirts
a set of nurses' scrubs - matching top and pants.
a serving platter
& two mystery paperbacks

At my local Hospice consignment shop the other day. Total cost? $7.00. That'll buy you less than two lattes at Starbuck$. Or maybe just one paperback anywhere else.

The clothes were all quality name-brands at that.

One of these days I'm going to have to check out FreeCyle as well. I wish I had a pickup truck.

15. I kept back all my smaller clothes thinking that I might fit into them later
and didn't want to buy new ones. Now I realize that I can bring them all to Goodwill and when (IF) I lose the weight I can just go to there and replace them.

WHY did I wait so long?!

16. Oooh that's a great idea
D'oh--I was just lamenting how I can't find any decent jeans these days. I really don't like how much spandex there is in new ones--I tend to like the way 100 percent cotton "holds me in"--they don't stretch out as much as spandex-laden jeans, which are useless after one wearing, then I have to wash them in hot water to tighten them up again.

Betcha anything there are some decent "old fashioned" cotton jeans at Goodwill, no?

22. zOMG
I went to one of those sites where you plug in your measurements and how you like to wear your jeans, and it comes back with the "perfect" jeans to fit you...and they start at $150-$175! I'll take $4 and a few actual try-on sessions anyday! :hi:

17. i'm with you
i've been frequenting the thrift stores a lot more lately, mostly because i don't have a job right now and money is tight, but also because it's more likely that i'll find clothes that fit me properly.

20. You have to be in a good-sized area, though, to find good stuff --
and an area that is not totally economically depressed, either. All there is at my local thrift stores is recycled clothing from WalMart. Not what I'm looking for, to be honest. When I lived in LA, San Diego, Atlanta, DC, NY - those areas often had real finds. Now I'm in a very rural area, and there is not much to be found. Not even in Asheville.

And our local Goodwills have started putting the best stuff onto eBay, which really sucks. They're culling what comes in, choosing what to put out and what to try to sell online. IMO, that's not what Goodwill is for - it is putting donated materials out of the reach of those who might need them most.

24. Waterloo, Iowa is where I shopped
Not really a big or rich area. There was Wal-Mart/K-Mart stuff there but also Ralph Lauren/Tommy Hilfiger/LL Bean/Lands End/Levi's

27. Back when I started dabbling in leatherwork,
I quickly realized how expensive leather could be. So I went to my local thrift store to look at the leather coats to see if there were any that would be worth cutting up.

Unfortunately the one I found was just too bad-ass to cut up, and I only had enough money for one leather coat. So I now own a bad-ass leather trenchcoat. :P Probably at least a hundred bucks worth of leather on the thing, and I bought it for 25 bucks.

28. I just sent all but one of my leather coats to Goodwill
one brown trench, one black trench, one brown bomber. I kept a brown blazer and black blazer. I just never wore them any more. I need to get rid of some ski jackets as well. How many coats does one person need?

But then I just moved to upstate NY, so I was REALLY glad to have the big leather trenchcoat. :)
