1. I have dial up at home so it might take a while
to download it, but I am going to spend the time.

I LOVE Scarlett Johansson and hadn't heard of this yet.

2. Okay I took the time to download and listen to all of it
The instruments seem a little loud, with not enough attention to voice, but it has a nice overall sound.

I like some of the aspects of the video. Like covering the tatoo, and covering the blemishes on her face, applying makeup, to make a gorgeous superstar. And her on the bus, blowing bubbles.

I would buy the CD, based on that song. I like it, and the lyrics are a bit haunting.

3. If you're a Tom Waits fan, she just sounds... starlet

and a video about... being a starlet? She just doesn't have the chops to sing Waits - and that's not simply an issue of vocal ability. it's about life. Maybe she'll help introduce his music to others. He's definitely an acquired taste and best taken after dark.

Tom Waits - not ready for polite society - thankfully.

I have come 500 miles just to see a halo
Come from St. Petersburg, Scarlett and me
Well I open my eyes, I was blind as can be
When you give a man luck, he must fall in the sea
And she wants you to steal and get caught
For she loves you for all that you are not
When you're falling down, falling down
When you're falling down, falling down, falling down

You forget all the roses, don't come around on Sunday
She's not gonna choose you for standing so tall
Go on and take a swig of that poison and like it
And don't ask for silverware, don't ask for nothing
Go on and put your ear to the ground
You know you will be hearing that sound......falling down.
You're falling down, falling down
Falling down, Falling down, falling down

When you're falling down, falling down, falling down

Go on down and see that wrecking ball come swinging on along
Everyone knew that hotel was a goner
They broke all the windows, they took all the door knobs
And they hauled it away in a couple of days
Now someone yell timber and take off your hat
It's a lot smaller down here on the ground
You're falling down, falling down, falling down
Falling down, falling down, falling down

Someone's falling down, falling down, falling down
Falling down, falling down, falling down

4. i love waits and prefer his version
however.. when different people sing the same songs they mean different things both to the listener and the person covering the song. i don't try to compare her version to his.. because to me they really are two different songs.

6. yeah, I can appreciate that
but I also MUCH prefer Van Morrison's version of "Have I Told You Lately" over the more popularized Rod Stewart one (bleech). And Waits' version of Downtown Train to Stewart's.

but then again, my DU name is from Waits so I doubt I have any objectivity at all. :)

he's the patron saint of sorrow, to me.

8. the thing about waits is that he sings with so much passion
which is why so many of his songs really are his own.. even when covered.

oh, and rod stewart gets on my last nerves.. i can't listen to him.

5. I never knew she sang
I'd like to hear it at better quality...it does have a dreamy/haunting feel to it.

10. I have a subscription to Paste and she's on its cover
don't know - haven't been to a bookstore to check out the mags, but I remember when Cat Power released The Greatest and she was on EVERY magazine cover (and I love her voice - now SHE could do justice to Waits, I bet.)

11. Hmm, I can't say I'm impressed by her voice or her interpretation.
But she clearly has pretty good taste to be doing Tom Waits covers in the first place. And a couple of her picks (Falling Down and Anywhere I Lay My Head) are among my favorites of his songs.
