I hope the Twins fans I encountered at last night's game are the exception, and not the rule...

I went to the Rockies-Twins game down in Denver last night. Minnesota was the only team I'd never seen play before, so I was excited for the game. What made it even better was that my best friend got off work last night and was able to join me.

Then the game started, and it quickly dawned on me that within a stone's throw of where we were sitting there were possibly 15 of the rudest baseball fans I have ever encountered in the many games I have gone to in the last 15+ years. What made it worse was that that were all Twins fans.

The worst two were a couple of guys, possibly late 20's or so, sitting two rows right behind my friend and myself. They were perhaps the most obnoxious, boorish, rudest fans I have ever come across. Constantly yelling and heckling, harassing the Rockies fans within earshot (including my friend and I), screaming and cursing. I talked to the usher about them, but there was never any action taken. I guess not enough people complained about them being obnoxious morons...

They weren't the only ones. One section over there was a row full of Minnesota fans, and they weren't much better. With the yelling shouting, screaming, and taunting they were all doing, you might have thought the Twins were on the verge of winning the World Series.

I know there are some nice, well-behaved Twins fans out there, but they certainly weren't sitting anywhere near me last night. The fans near me were, by FAR, the worst fans I have ever encountered. The fans of every other visiting team I've ever seen were much more pleasant - Yankees fans, Red Sox fans, Cubs fans, mostly nice people who were at the game to cheer for their favorite team.

I had a good time, don't get me wrong. I love going to baseball games, especially with a good friend... But if this is going to be the case, I think I'll pass on going to a game the next time the Minnesota Twins visit Denver...

So how are all you guys doing today? :hi:

4. I had a good time at the game, don't get me wrong!
I was with my best friend, so we were having a lot of fun. The Rockies played a close game, but by the way these guys were acting you'd thing we were a) IN Minnesota, b) that the Twins were up by about 10 runs, and c) that it was Game 7 of the World Series.

I'm all for cheering and being a good fan, but they were just plain bad, rude, boorish fans. I know there are good Twins fans out there - I just didn't actually see any of them last night. x(

9. Giants fans are among the best in baseball
They're loyal, they pay attention, they know the game better than most and they've got the class to cheer an opponent when warranted.

They're also brutal to the enemy, and that includes defectors. Jeff Kent still gets booed at AT&T.

I don't like the abuse they heap on the Dodgers, of course, but I gotta admit they're really good at it.

27. Niner fans too.
I can count on my hands the number of drunk or belligerent fans I've seen at a game who weren't wearing the visiting team's gear.

Though lately I've caught people standing in the aisles during plays. It used to be if you couldn't get from the mezannine to your seat, you'd kneel down so you weren't blocking anybody's view, and some people seem to have missed that little nicety (I think because now there are people going to games who haven't had seat rights forever, they may just be new to live games and not know any better.)

11. I absolutely agree!
I've been to a few Giants-Rockies games in my time, and I don;'t know if I've ever met a rude Giants fan. Sure, there were some loud ones, but when they weren't cheering, they were chatting and being friendly. I give BIG props to the Giants fans I've met!

These guys were the worst ever. I ran into a couple less-than-friendly Mets fans a few years back, but they were nothing compared to these guys last night.

16. When it's just abusive and unoriginal, it's intolerable
I'd never expect or even want cordiality from opposing fans, though, unless a guy gets hurt or makes a helluva catch or something. If the smack is creative, I enjoy it.

Best line ever: When Felix Jose was playing for Class-A Modesto, he came up to bat in Salinas one night and my friend Buddy yelled, "Ahhh, get a last name!"

:D

15. To think all Twins fans are like that
is ridiculous.

being a Twins fan and a MN native I can tell you that unequivocally, we are not like that. I am sure there are some, just like I bet there are some similar fans of all baseball teams.

To think we are all like those fans is simply ludicrous.

18. I never said I thought all Twins fans were like that.
Just from chatting with the other Twins fans on the board, I know that's not the case because you all seem like nice people. I'm just saying that the fans at last night's game were a very poor representation of the Twins' fan base, and I really wish we were sitting near some of the good fans, as opposed to being surrounded by the bad ones.

22. My theory on stuff like this is
Colorado is pretty far from MN. So the fans that travel there are more "hard core" than most..Or they were just drunk..and you had the misfortune to sit near them.
I've been to more football games than baseball games and can I say..the fan behavior seems a bit more obnoxious at football games..There was one game here on a monday night where a fight between fans broke out and the police sprayed TEAR GAS into the crowd.

23. That's a good theory, and I agree completely.
I'm just saying that when a fan acts like that when they're visiting with their team, it can reflect badly on their entire fan base.

And as for football, well, I've seen football fans much worse than the guys at last night's game before. I was talking mainly in terms of them being the worst baseball fans I'd ever come across. The bad football fans I've met in my times are the worst far and away.

19. I agree. There's nothing wrong with being passionate about your team...
But if your team is the visiting team, try and remember that some people out there will assume all of your fans are like that if you act like an idiot because your team wins. I know people get really involved in the games sometimes, but really - it's just a GAME. If you know your team has great fans, don't go on the road with your team and misrepresent everybody who loves your team by acting like an ass.

32. I don't know if you've ever been to Coors Field, but that is NOT the norm.
I understand people are passionate about their teams, but there has to be a line. If I'm going to pay good money to enjoy this game, I'd like to do it with at least only a minimum of jackassery. But when it's coming from directly behind you, as well as to your left and right, it gets a little bothersome.

I don;t go to a baseball game expecting to be surrounded by loud, drunken idiots. If I wanted that, I'd start going to CU football games again.

There were the occasional puffs of smoke that wafted through the crowd, but the stadium security team did a pretty good job at shutting that sort of down pretty quickly... A damn shame, it is! :hippie:
