What do you think defines civilization?
Indoor plumbing. Running water. Hell, I can even live without electricity but without a shower and flush toilets everything falls apart.

2. Pashtunuali.
The Afghan code of honor. There are three obligations:

1. Milmastya - Hospitality.
2. Badal - Revenge.
3. Nanawatai - The obligation to give sanctuary to all who ask, even an enemy.

It's incredibly civilized...

Children, elders, the mentally and physically challenged, etc.

7. I know! I know!! I learned this in Intro to Western Civ!
Edited on Sat May-17-08 11:41 PM by mycritters2
Civilization occurs when settled agriculture advances to the point that a minority of the population can feed the whole population, allowing the majority to pursue occupations besides producing food. This leads to the development of cities, trade, the arts, recreation and other civilizing cultural forms. That's what they taught us in Western Civ.

But, personally, I think the Pop Tart was a HUGH leap forward.

13. Paraphrasing a favorite
When a civilization doesn't respect plumbers as much as it does philosophers, it will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy.

and the Romans rocked for starting that plumbing stuff :headbang:

I try not to take it for granted because I know a lot of people want it who don't have it, but it is the thing I couldn't live without, baths.
