One of our kittens died tonight.

12 weeks old. She was fine, perfectly healthy, and then about a half-hour ago she keeled over, started convulsing, and died within a few minutes. I just got off the phone with the Vet. He said it was probably something congenital--a heart problem, maybe. I can't afford an autopsy, so we'll never know for sure.

I was holding her when she went. I'm still in shock. It was so sudden. My son is hysterical; he and Debbie are outside burying her right now.

Her name was Sheba.

Edit: We had taken a photo of Sheba cuddling with one of our other kittens, Spot, at about 4:00 pm. They had been playing like mad and were conked out together. She died about 4 hours after this picture was taken. Sheba is the black kitten. Yes, they're holding "paws".

Looking at that picture now is just haunting. At the time, I just thought it was adorable...something cute to share with the Lounge. I wouldn't have dreamed that it would be the last picture of her that I'd ever take.

Brendan's doing a lot better today, thankfully. He was absolutely shredded last night. Hell, we all were. Nobody expects such a thing with a kitten so young. *sigh*

At least the other three still appear to be as perfectly healthy as ever. Part of me is worried, though. What if there's something wrong with them too, something that hasn't shown itself yet? :(

...one kitty that isn't quite "right." The other kitties, on the other hand, should be fine, knock wood (insert picture of lefty, whacking herself in the head).

Whatever happens, though, know that you're giving them the best love and care that they could get or deserve, and that YOU, as cat parents, are doing everything as well as you possibly can. :hug:
