I agree with the poster of this reply that everyone with a brain tumor deserves to be prayed for, but I don't think it's inappropriate to ask for prayers for Senator Kennedy. He's been a champion in the Senate for over 40 years, for many people.

13. I hope he and his family come through this okay
But I have to say, its sort of odd to ask people who aren't religious to pray. What earthly good would the prayers of someone who doesn't beleive in the power of prayer do?

I don't mean that to be snarky but it just strikes me as odd.

17. I think people sometimes do things even if they don't believe in them.
Mostly to help others.

They might not believe in God, but they can pray. We can all pray and that's the beauty of prayer. :)

23. So tap into a power greater than yourself...
...and send out a silent message of hope. It doesn't have to be a "God" of any particular religion. Unless you believe there is no power greater than yourself in the universe.

25. Oh, brother
I don't want to get into a theological debate in a thread that is about Ted Kennedy, a man whom I admire and for whom I hope only the best. But just because I don't believe "tapping into" any power is going to make any difference in anyone's life doesn't mean I think so highly of myself that I "believe there is no power greater than yourself in the universe."

I hope for the best, for him and his family. If people choose to comfort themselves with prayer, that is their choice and all power to 'em. There are ways of feeling compassion and hope other than imploring "powers" or deities for help, you know. Each of us in our own way. Offering nothing but variations on prayer just ignores that.

Again, I'm not trying to piss in anyone's corn flakes. The wording of the OP simply struck me as odd when asking people who didn't believe in it to pray. That is all.

30. A lot of people don't give a rat's ass about non-believers.
We're SUPPOSED to kowtow and yield to THEIR beliefs, even emulate them if we're told to, and if we don't, then shame the fuck on us and get called an atheist fundamentalist or other such nonsense.

36. Oh good grief...
Prayer in this circumstance = good wishes & thoughts. Whether you believe in God, a higher power, white light or positive energy. It matters not and if your good wishes turn out to be one of these, what can it hurt? Prayer to many of us doesn't mean praying to some deity. It's only giving positive thoughts.

Why do people have to fuck up a thoughtful, caring thread with this bullshit?

38. And I tried to point out in every response
That I was not trying to "fuck up" anyone's thread. I made an observation, added more than once that my hopes are that Senator Kennedy and his family will come through this okay and that there are many ways of offering hope and compassion. And I do very much offer hope and compassion to him.

"Whether you believe in God, a higher power, white light or positive energy." Well, I don't believe in any of that, which was my point. Why do people have to cram their beliefs down the throat of everyone else? It's all variation on prayer to some "power" and I simply tried to (gently) point out that there are other ways of feeling compassion. Obviously my ways don't live up to your standards - so very sorry. :banghead:

And to you, Senator, my best wishes.

40. I didn't say you had to believe in it...
I said...good thoughts aren't necessarily categorized. All they really are...are good thoughts. People seem to be so damn thin skinned when it comes to religion, they strike out and act indignant when all someone was asking for were good thoughts. You don't have to be so literal. Just look at the big picture and the sentiment of the thread. That's all.

Teddy was the only one of the three Kennedy brothers to get to do any real good. It just breaks my heart that this is how he has to go. HE survives plane crashes and some terrible car accidents to be killed by fucking cancer? God that sucks.
I'm crying. I admire him so much, and I admired his brothers, all cut down way too soon.
