We had a 3 day Monopoly game and surprised anyone came out alive.

That game tends to bring out the worst in some people.

1. I won't play it anymore
and that's exactly the reason. The most pleasant, reasonable, entertaining people can turn into something...unrecognizable.

I haven't played since I was in high school or shortly thereafter. We don't even have it in the house.

2. Well, it is basically a board game version of capitalism...
What do you expect? :P

3. We had a game one time go for two weeks, not played steady but on and off.
I should have wrote a paper about what happened.

I the only board game I ever liked was Clue.

6. I once got in a fistfight over a game of Monopoly
I was the banker, so I was cheating. I kind of thought I was supposed to be cheating. It's about capitalism, right?

One of my friends (actually, probably the best friend I've ever had) caught me. He's big, he's angry, and he's incredibly competitive. What really set him off was the fact that no one seemed to care. They all had this attitude of "Of COURSE he cheated. We've ALL been cheating. Remember when X and Z went to the store for more soda? They made a deal to screw over the rest of us. And A's been floating loans to B for the whole game, and B's been stealing money from her boyfriend all night! It's just capitalism!"

That's when he really lost it. The table got knocked over. Oddly colored money was floating like confetti while miniature silver Scottie dogs and plastic hotels slammed against the wall. Then my face slammed against the wall and I begged for mercy. I haven't seen him in five or six years, but the last time I checked he had never played another board game.

12. Ha. We used to play "Cheat Monopoly" sometimes.

The idea was to cheat, and not get caught. Whether you moved the wrong number of spaces or shortchanged someone or whatever. If you got caught you had to do whatever it was you were supposed to do in the first place, but no other penalty. So everybody had to play very close attention to the game, or suffer the consequences.

My Dad said it was a more accurate reflection of capitalism anyway.

7. Board games in general.
If I were a psychologist I would make it my life's work to simply observe people playing board games.

I HATE playing board games, but I LOVE to watch other people play board games.

Worst argument I've ever been in was during a game of Life. Purported spinner malfunction.

9. The brutality of Capitalism.
As a kid I usually won but took special delight in sending my cousin Peter home in tears after what I made sure was a humiliating loss.
As an adult I detest Capitalism and the "winner/loser" culture it creates.
My cousin died of Aids in 1990 and I've not played the game in many years.

I'm sorry, Peter.

11. I was addicted to the computer version for a while
I noticed something very interesting. It's very easy to win quickly against the computer players but if you avoid the easy win and keep the other players in the game indefinitely, you can all accumulate millions. So just like real life, you can either make a few bucks with the quick and decisive victory or keep a level playing field and enjoy decades of financial growth for all parties.

13. MrG used to "cheat" all the freaking time...
He would slide his $500's (his, not stolen from the bank) under the board, so that I would think he was poorer than he really was. I would then go and blow my money on houses and hotels and he would bring them out and kill me at that game. The one time I was beating him, he got me drunk...and I ended up passing out before the game was over.

14. Lol!
The last time my family played, we watched my sister turn into Leona Helmsley. She became really twisted and mean. When her husband wanted to quit the game, they both insisted it was perfectly acceptable for him to give her all his money and properties. Very ugly scene. We don't play that game anymore.

On the other hand, we can't play Trivial Pursuit anymore: my stepfather totally dominates in the history category.

15. I don't know a single person that will play Monopoly with me any more.
That game does bring out the worst in me. Well, I think it's the BEST in me as far as winning goes. The more people playing, the better. Slow, individual destruction of each player...

Oh, sorry. Kind of zoned out there for a minute.
