Recommend me some movies
The only restriction is that I need to be able to find it at Blockbuster. I ain't going out to a theater. I can rent 3 movies for the cost of seeing one at the theater and that doesn't include popcorn with extra butter. :)

I like romances the least and documentaries the most, but one of the movies I'm going to get is Super Troopers if that tells you anything.

12. "Wordplay" and "Shut Up And Sing" are two great documentaries
the first is about crossword puzzles and is really entertaining, the second is about the Dixie Chicks and how they dealt with their treatment after they made the comment about Bush. Highly reccommended.

16. There is a funny comedy - only shown on HBO, I think - but now
rentable, called "What Planet Are You From?" with Gary Shandling, Annette Bening, Greg Kinnear, John Goodman, Ben Kingsley - offbeat, but silly and funny, if you're in the mood for a comedy.

I am a sucker for the Bourne movies - if you haven't seen the latest one, The Bourne Ultimatum, try it out.

Bound
Raising Arizona
Women On The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown
What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?
The Fifth Element (it's funny and great music - but the part that always gets to me is the Pictures Of War bit, where the 5th element decides she doesn't want to save us cuz if we can do things like that we don't deserve to be saved.)

Khash.

11. I rented it on DVD. It came out recently.
A couple of older, more obscure titles that are real gems:

Crime Spree (2003): Harvey Keitel as a mob guy vs some French hoodlums. It's very funny.
What's The Worst that Could Happen? (2001): Danny DeVito and Martin Lawrence in a fun Donald Westlake story.

13. Um
I'm a big fan of Asian film. I'm wondering about some outstanding titles which you'd likely find at Blockbuster... two that spring to mind are "Hero" and "Infernal Affairs". Infernal Affairs focuses on the exploits of an undercover cop working in the underworld and a mobster infiltrating the police force. "Hero" is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, the cinematography is breathtaking.

25. The Departed.
If you haven't seen "The Departed"...don't. It'll probably piss you off. It's almost-scene-for-scene a remake (and an inferior one at that, though still good.) of Infernal Affairs. The ending is different because they tacked some follow-up onto the end.

I'm pissed that Scorsese didn't tell people that it's a remake of a foreign film...I think that's dishonest. How hard is it to give credit where due?

Stanley Tucci and Oliver Platt (Hm. Stan and Ollie...), Steve Buscemi as a depressed man named Happy, and a wild and wonderful cast (Allison Janney, Billy Connolly, Hope Davis, Campbell Scott, Lili Taylor et al). Don't forget to watch till the VERY end.

Some others you may have overlooked:

The Spanish Prisoner. A David Mamet mystery with very little violence and no profanity to speak of. Love that ending.

Lantana. A woman disappears without explanation, and the investigating detective finds surprising links to his own life (and sins). Love, loneliness, grief, infidelity, and interconnected lives in modern-day Sydney. This is one of my favorite movies of the past decade.

Cradle Will Rock. Tim Robbins's film about the Federal Theatre Project is, like George Clooney's Good Night and Good Luck, based on actual events and quite relevant to today's politics and culture.

Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her. Another series of vignettes from Rodrigo Garcia (Ten Tiny Love Stories, Nine Lives), all focusing on the lives of women.

I usually cannot STAND Will Farrell, but that one had a decent plot, and it wasn't dependent of so many sight-gags and pratfalls and such.

Besides, Maggie Gyllenhaal looked hot, so that was a plus.

"Strictly Ballroom."

Just three random choices. I'm on a mission to get as many people to watch Lone Star as I can. Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena, Matthew Howeveryouspellmcconnahee, Kris Kristofferson. Best movie about Texas ever made. Heck, it's one of the only ones I can even stand. The very final line is the best line about Texas ever. Ever, I say.

It'll keep you occupied for 6 hours or more, because it's 3 hours long and you'll have to watch it AT LEAST twice.

While I'm at it, I might as well list a tentative Top 5 (in no particular order): "Full Metal Jacket," "Taxi Driver," "The Godfather Pts. I & II," "Blue Velvet," and maybe "Videodrome" or "Reservoir Dogs" for the final slot. Yeah, I like violent, psychologically fucked-up movies - what of it?

48. I just heard of this one:

As an alternative, I liked "Shooter." It has some holes and plot inconsistencies, but the
overall premise (that corruption is pervasive at the highest levels of government, and
that the people at the top are willing to use anyone and everyone) is valid.

51. "Enchanted" and "The Namesake"

These are two movies my two daughters recommended to me; without their strong suggestions, I probably wouldn't have gotten around to seeing them.

"Enchanted" is a beautifully done feel-good piece, one of the best updated fairy tales ever. And "The Namesake" is a profoundly moving tale of an East Indian family's experiences after coming to New York from Calcutta.

Enjoy....
