Mmmmmmmmmmm... homemade vegan baklava
Good gawd, do I rock or what?

I have phyllo left, too. I should make another batch with pistachios instead of walnuts.

1. Yummmm, that sounds tasty.
I made strawberry shortcake tonight, but we had whipped cream on it, so it wouldn't be vegan, but I bet it wasn't as good as your sweeties!
I love baklava!

5. I'm really excited.
I used to be able to get vegan baklava at a market in Monterey, but they quit carrying it (I think the supplier went under) and in any case, I don't get out that direction much.

Some kinda dairy stuff?

I dunno how it's made. I just know it makes my tonsils come.

4. Butter. Loads and loads of butter.
I just used a non-dairy margarine instead.

Get it? A beet salad! Hahaha.... Yeah, I need a life.

What is non-vegan in regular baklava?

6. Beets, eh?
I like to think my family immigrated so that I wouldn't have to eat them. Really it had more to do with World War I, but I like having an excuse not to like them.

Normally there's a ton of dairy butter in baklava. It gets painted on each layer of phyllo, and a little piece winds up having about two days worth of saturated fat.

7. I emmigrated out of Mississippi, so I never had beets back then.
Except the canned ones, and that's not even food. My native food was grits, red beans, and fried anything that swam, flew, ran, hopped, laid still, or wandered in front of a car. I gave up the fried dead things, but kept the grits and red beans (without the sausage).

So what do you use instead of butter? Or do you just leave it out?

10. I had vegan ice cream sandwiches (tofutti cuties) but leftykid ate them all.
If I want desert I have to make something he doesn't like. He detests nuts, so this should be safe.

12. I love Cuties, but I'm still pissed at Tofutti
The other week I called about what products they sell are vegan, and the lady told me all their frozen items are vegan, well not the fucking blintzes that I bought without reading the damned label.

Honey= not vegan, but agave is an easy substitution.

24. You certainly do rock.
It sounds gorgeous.

Here I've got vegan bread proving as we speak. Do you know whether shop-bought bread is generally vegan or not? I'm not vegan, but I do like to know what's in the stuff I eat.

25. Grocery bread *can* be vegan.
Many commercial brands may contain whey or honey. The fresh in-store made stuff may have eggwash on it (gives it that shiny appearance).

I thought that something like that might be the case - they always seem to slip stuff in which isn't needed.

29. I don't like baklava
phyllo is one of my favorite bread products in the universe, and to me soaking it in honey just destroys the best characteristics of phyllo, turning it into a sticky sugary lead brick.
