Any Word experts here?
I am having trouble formatting my thesis according to Thesis Office guidelines. For starters I have tables that run two or three pages and the guidelines say I need to have the label or caption continued on subsequent pages but Word will not let me do that. And I have found nothing online to help. I am also having page numbering issues, specifically with page numbers on landscaped figures. For those the number needs to be on the bottom right corner but rotated so that when printed it prints normally (the top of the table would be on the left and it would be sideways when included in the document). I was able to do this by using a text box but it screwed up page numbering for later (portrait) pages. Now I find out I also need to move some figures closer to where they are first mentioned in the text. Is it possible to move entire pages around within a document?

2. To get the header row to repeat on subsequent pages
right click on the row with your headings. In the popup menu that appears, select table properties. In the row tab of the popup windowm, there's an option to repeat that row as a header row across all pages.

5. The problem was the doing that would not allow me to place a caption
on subsequent pages.

What I ended up doing was to place a page break between pages of the table. Then, each table is separate. I added the caption at the top, then added a row and pasted the header info into it.

Then the there were other formatting issues but I think I have fixed those.

The problem was that I had some texts that mentioned both tables as well as two figures. Well the rules are that the table/ figures have to appear within 1.5 pages after being mentioned. So with tables that are 4 and two pages long, I had to break up the text section so as to put it closer to where the figures were. What a giant pain this is.

3. From my experience with Word
I think you'll get the best results if you have a dead chicken, a magic circle/pentacle on the ground, and the still-beating heart of a virgin germanic princess, and 5 black candles.

There's some incantation that goes with it, but the general gist involves waving the dead chicken around over the heart, yaddah yaddah yaddah, summon the dark lord Satan, and he'll take one look at your computer and say something like, "Okay, I'm the master of evil, but DAMN. These guys really know what they're doing."

Long story short, he'll set it up for you. And then he'll probably try to steal your soul. But hey, at least your paper'll be formatted properly.

6. Hmm, haven't tried selling my soul yet.
I did scream and throw things though.

8. Only works if you scream the right words and wave the chicken.
Throwing doesn't cut it. :)

4. For the page number issue, you are on the right track.
1. Make sure you are doing page numbers as "footers" and inserting the page numbers in an automated way. Do NOT manually type each number at the bottom of the page. That's for losers, and each edit you do will potentially mess up the numbering for the rest of the entire document.
2. For rotated text, insert a text box into the footer.
3. Select page number (to enter that field into the text box).
4. go to format --> text direction. Select what you need.
5. Make sure each "section" of the document (a landscaped section, or a portrait section) begins with a "Section break" - to do that, go to insert section break.
6. Once you have the page number in the footer, you can go to format page number, and tell it whether you want it to continue numbering from the previous section, or start fresh, or start from a specific number.

Don't think in terms of moving "pages" - because pages just flow from one page to another, and edits will change that - it's not like an acrobat document in that way. Highlight and drag figures and put them where you want them. The page numbers if you did them in the automated way - the right way - will fix themselves with no work on your part.

7. Okay thanks.
I hadn't tried the text box within the footer yet.

The problem is that all the portrait pages have to have their page numbers as headers. But the landscape pages need to have them as footers, so they will print correctly.

9. That shouldn't be a problem.
So long as you have section breaks, you should be able to alternate sections with headers and with footers, and keep the numbering going continuously. You'll have to make sure "link to previous" in your headers and footers is unchecked, so the rotated footers only show up on the sections where you need it.

I can't even do the first page. Word sucks.
