A gray cloud, a crane on wing...

The Crane Wife 3-- Decemberists
(part 3 of a 3 part song)
"The Crane Wife 3"

And under the boughs unbowed
All clothed in a snowy shroud
She had no heart so hardened
All under the boughs unbowed

Each feather it fell from skin
'Till thread bare while she grew thin
How were my eyes so blinded?
Each feather it fell from skin

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low

A gray sky, a bitter sting
A rain cloud, a crane on wing
All out beyond horizon
A grey sky, a bitter sting

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low

1. A CD which grew on me...for its' gamesmanship.
I bought it and hated it. Then I realized it tells a story (The Island) and within that story someone is telling the Japanese folk-tale of The Crane Wife (which the album is named after) as a distraction while a crime (either a burglary or an assassination) is being committed (The Perfect Crime). All that is brilliant, it gives the CD a high-replay value. Now I'm obsessed trying to understand the twisting storylines and figure out what the story is. It doesn't help that it is out-of-order and that there are two parts missing. (They were free iTunes downloads for buying this album from certain retailers.)

Have I ever mentioned that I love puzzles and games? Every lyric is a hint and the obscure literary/cultural references running from The Tempest to Joyce to 1970's religiously-motivated serial murders in Belfast to a hoax perpetrated by Magellan's first mate claiming encounters with a race of 12-foot-tall men in South America make it a game well worth the effort.
