Very cool site with animated maps of Civil War Battles...that would be the "War of Northern Aggression" to some of our community... :)

http://civilwaranimated.com/index.php

To anyone interested in the movement of the brigades, etc., and the larger strategy in these battles this site has some interesting animations...nothing too detailed, but some good overview stuff to go along with the animated maps.

I found it interesting, but I'm strange that way... :D

EDIT: the menu is at the left on the main page... :dunce:

1. I shouldn't pick ...

... but I'm strange that way. :)

There are various errors in at least some of these animations, specifically the narrative that goes with them. Other things are open to interpretation.

And the picture they have of General Longstreet for the Gettysburg order of battle is not General Longstreet. No one is entirely sure who that picture is, but it is thought to be one of his relatives that was on his staff, i.e. someone who could have had a family resemblance.

Overall, it's pretty cool though.

3. Oh, it's a good idea ...
There's just always some nutjob like myself lurking about who has spent far too much of his time studying these things. There's not much related to Civil War history that isn't open to some form of debate.

:hi:

4. No, no nutjobbery...
nutjobbery was me, a California boy, deciding walking most of the Gettyburg battlefield on a sweltering day in July, 2006 would be a good idea...in cowboy boots...

It gave me a whole new perspective on the battle...

Two weeks later, on a beautiful summer evening, I had Shiloh all to myself for 3 awesome hours...

:D

9. Shiloh is great ...
I dislike Gettysburg. The McDonald's sign and such kinda kill some of it for me.

And what I like about Shiloh is there's basically nothing else around.

I've walked all over Gettysburg though, both in sweltering July and frigid December. It's not comfortable either way.

Just imagine doing it in a wool uniform. :)

10. I also thought the commercial aspect of Gettysburg was inappropriate...
But Shiloh is way cool...I got there on a beautiful, warm, low humidity summer evening. 5:00pm, midweek. The rangers were closing the little museum but told me I had till about 8:30 before someone would be around to lock the gates.

3 1/2 hours, and I only saw one other group of people...it was an awesome experience.

5. I like it
I'm just finishing up a book on the Overland Campaign tonight, and I wish I'd had this to look at earlier. It's so difficult to visualize all these troop movements and their significance with nothing more than a railroad map and paragraph after paragraph of exposition.

7. That is what I liked about it...
One of the few books I have seen that had enough maps, and placed in the books to conform to the movements under consideration in the exposition, was Noah Andre Trudeau's "Gettysburg,"...

Which I thoroughly enjoyed... :hi:

6. I thought we refered to it as
The Unpleasantness Between The States. Much nicer than The War Of Northern Aggression.
