Pic thread for the DU *2D/3D digital artists*. Show your works! (Dial-up warning)
I'll start with a few of mine.

Early attempts in Swiss high altitude herding. (Didn't work out well ...)

Somewhere, in a storage place:

Imitating the look of the movie '300.' (Well, I tried. This is Sparta, BTW.)

Introducing the new Merlot for these cyborg-relaxing times. Now with 10% more WD-40. (Yes, that's Liberal radio she's listening to.)

5. I need to do some more 3D art.
I've been doing so much 3D programming lately that I haven't made many assets in almost a year.

Ignore the file folders, I just dug a desktop screenshot out of Photobucket

Bump-mapped, faux color Earth. I can't find the bump map file anymore x(

6. Hey you!
How's it going! :hi:

Nice modeling! Love the lighting you've used!

What app were you using for the Earth display? Can't you just get the color texture map and convert it to gray scale for the bump map? Here's a place for an Earth mesh (3ds MAX):

Oh, and did you ever see this one: ;)

9. Hey!
I'm pretty well...busy with school. And, yeah, I saw that. That's really good...and my hands are gigantic.

The first two pics are done in Cinema 4D (first one in release 8, second one in release 10), the third in Bryce, though I later added in characters done in C4D.

The thing with the bump map is that it's actually a bump based on the Earth's physical topography (see the mountains in Iran in the pic), so it's not so easy to grayscale the texture. Come to think of it, it may still be on my other computer...I'll have to look.

11. LOL!
Perhaps the head is too small! :P (Since it's a blend, I might have overlooked the proper sizes ...)

I've only played with the demo of C4D once and couldn't get really familiar with it. Now I'm stuck to 3ds Max and Vray - but Vray's also available for C4D, which is a big plus. I think C4D and 3ds Max are the best ones for 3D rendering; all the others have a few good things but lack about others. Bryce is nice, but Vue seems to handle terrains way better.

Glad to see you! Keep being busy with school! It's a good thing!

14. I really like C4D
I used it in high-school, so it was the first industry-level modeler I really got my hands on. Other than that, I've really only used Maya, but I still vastly prefer C4D. Truth is, all 3D modelers do mostly the same things, except the interfaces and naming conventions diverge wildly, which always threw me off with Maya.

I've never used Vue, but I don't consider myself to be a fabulous 3D artist by any means, and most of my stuff is geared toward content generation and processing for games, and I've found Bryce and C4D are easy to set up pipelines for.

18. I need to do more modeling myself,
but after my lame-ass attempt at a simple loudspeaker, I kind of gave up. Took me over two months to finish the thing, and it's not even accurate.

Yes, Maya looks kind of awkward, but so die 3ds Max when I first tried it. Now I'm pretty much used to it and try to do anything there, even it's a bit complicated. But if you can lay your hands on the Vray plugin for C4d, you'll be impressed about the lighting options you gather from it. As I said, I consider C4D and 3ds Max the two top programs. Look into Zbrush for modeling; right now I'm playing a bit with it.

Of course, I'm no artist at all, I just doodle around with the stuff. ;) And when I see some of the things here http://www.cgsociety.org/, I always be tempted to format my HD ...

51. Depends on the complexity of the game.
Edited on Wed May-28-08 12:26 PM by DarkTirade
Kind of a trite answer, but it also happens to be very true. :) My arcade-style game, http://www.stickmanltd.com/breakinvaders2.html">Break Invaders 2, didn't take long at all. I already knew generally what I had in mind for everything when I designed it, and I divided the design up into five different sections. So first I worked on getting it to work in general. I.E., the basic artwork and engine. Then I worked on the extras needed for the next section, then the next, ect. It's hard to figure out total man-hours, because it was just me doing stuff in my spare time. But I did it in my spare time in a matter of a few months, if that tells you anything. I did cheat and use a gamemaking program rather than programming from the ground up, but I still had to design the engine within the gamemaker program. But other than that, every bit of work that went into that game was my own. Graphics, sound, music, engine, level design, ect.

The 2d sidescroller, on the other hand, required a lot more design and planning and a little bit more work on the engine because I had to make it so that the enemies had rudimentary AI and there was gravity and the characters had to interact with the basic environment, ect. So even though I went with a very simple art style, it took much longer. I'd say it took about as much work to make the first rather buggy less than a third of the game that I had done than it did to do the entire arcade style game. And that's what I plan on tackling next. I wanna start that one over, and try to make it even a little better. :) And this time I want to make it less of a simple sidescroller and more of a Tomb Raider/Prince of Persia style running/jumping/climbing style. Will I be able to pull it off? Only time will tell.

Very interesting process. I know a few people who are making games, and they all use a gamemaking program to do it. I don't think that's cheating, but a resource to use with your own stuff. Again, I'm very impressed!

Seriously, that's what got me into wanting to do game design. I'd see all these cool games on my friends' Nintendos, then I'd try them out and find all these flaws in gameplay and design that weren't obvious when you were standing back and watching other people play. So now I try to make games that don't have those problems.

54. Again, thanks for the link!
I'll see what I can do with the low poly models (perhaps smooth the meshes if I want to use them and then texturing them,) but they're fine to use in the background - if you don't zoom in too much.

But there was a 'Nessie' model! I had to use it. Done in Vue 6 Xstream:

Yeah, I had to smooth the hell out of them. That was one reason I ended up painting over my Godzilla one. Still, finding any Godzilla mesh made my day. I actually did a half dozen G pics, but I haven't touched up the others yet. One of these days.

That poor shark is looking majorly outclassed. :)
