4. I see your roomie's got five saves
despite a 3.77 ERA and guys hitting .328 against him.

7. Yeah, I don't get it either.
Actually he has six saves. The BCs are pretty lousy at keeping things updated. The BCs' front office are pretty lousy at a lot of things.

Anyway, now I understand what is meant by "he's doing better than it looks in the stats."

:hi:

13. Boy, do I know that one
When Jeff Nelson pitched A-ball in Salinas in 1987, he was 3-7 with a 5.74 ERA, walked 71 guys in 80 innings and threw 17 wild pitches. That was a year after the Dodgers released him; in Bakersfield in '86 he was 0-7, 6.69 with 84 walks in 71 1/3 innings. But he played winter ball and worked his way up the minors, made it to Seattle in '92 and was an All-Star in 2001.

A pitcher can learn anything but speed, and Nelson had that all along. Seattle kept him because of it, and somewhere along the line he learned control.

I'll never forget something his wife, Colette, said to me in '87: "Hey, he's gonna be successful! That's our life!" :D

5. Say hi to Butch for me!
The Nashua Pride just retired his number. He was their skipper for 8 years, and won championships in both the Atlantic league and Can-Am league.

12. He was my brother's favorite player when we were kids
Hobson was never the most talented third baseman in the league (not when you had George Brett and Mike Schmidt out there), but he was a gutsy, balls to the wall player who had some pop in his bat.

Trivia fact: His real name is Clell Lavern Hobson.

The Nashua Pride continued their tradition of hiring former Sox players as manager by hiring Rick Miller as the new skipper. Miller was a backup outfielder who played on the 1975 AL championship club, and who married Carlton Fisk's sister.
