'Andy Griffith' whistler dies at 88
http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/27/earle.hagen.ap/index.html

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Earle H. Hagen, who co-wrote the jazz classic "Harlem Nocturne" and composed memorable themes for "The Andy Griffith Show," "I Spy," "The Mod Squad" and other TV shows, died Monday. He was 88.

Hagen, who is heard whistling the folksy tune for "The Andy Griffith Show," died at his home in Rancho Mirage, his wife, Laura, said Tuesday. He had been in ill health for several months.

During his long musical career, Hagen performed with the top bands of the swing era, composed for movies and television, and wrote one of the first textbooks on movie composing.

He and Dick Rogers were nominated for an Academy Award for best music scoring for the 1960 Marilyn Monroe movie "Let's Make Love."

5. As good as any ...
I wouldn't be surprised when Andy bites the big one, they do a '9/11' and have just a black screen with something like "TVLand mounrs the death of Andy Griffith" in white letters for 24 hours. Then ...

A one week celebration of his work, 24 hours of Andy, Matlock and any show he did a cameo in! :puke:

9. I'm not and they promote like it's the greatest show EVAH!
I Love Lucy gets second billing to it. Remember when they were selling "The Andy Grffith Show Game"? I do - and they pulled it because even the angst-ridden Gen X'ers know shit when they see it.

13. Does the love that senior citizens feel for Matlock extend to the Andy Griffith show?
If so, demographics this tuesday during the weeklong AG marathon could heavily favor Obama

8. He could whistle two tunes at the same time
Several of my friends saw him at the elementary school (before I moved there) really sad.

I have to say that I am amazed at the Andy Griffith haters here :silly: good lord how can you not like that show????

12. Why all the hate for The Andy Griffith Show?
It's a sweet show - a different time, a different place. Don Knotts was a gem, and Andy was always a good guy.
The Beverly Hillbillies and I Love Lucy make me want to crawl out of my skin, but I can cope with (and even enjoy, in small doses) The Andy Griffith Show.

19. They clearly didn't grow up in the south
especially North Carolina :-)

Although it never had any black people on the show (no show did really back then) it did have the first professional woman on TV---Ellie Walker she was a college grad and a pharmacist
