I actually took a fair amount of crap this weekend when I mentioned in front of friends that I'd sooner dye my hair blue than sit through the film.

I have negative interest in seeing it. I plan on actively avoiding it.

8. I sat through the first one in the theater and then about two years ago,
the second viewing being at my girlfriend's insistence. I will NEVER understand the appeal of that movie. Poorly-written, predictable space-age cowboys and Indians.

If I wanted to watch that, I'd watch Firefly. At least the writing was good in most of those episodes.

21. Yes, that's exactly it.
If you look up Night Watch on imdb.com and go to the quotes section, you'll see the same quote I use in my sig block.

:hi:

Which movie do you like better, and did you see the international version of Night Watch or the American one? The latter leaves out an important scene (Ignat's failed seduction shortly after the rivet falls from the plane into the coffee cup), I'll describe it if you missed it.

:)

22. I watched the Russian version of both.
I try to avoid dubbed versions when I can. I'm not sure which one I liked better. The first one was so different from any other "vampire" movie (I hate most vampire movies) and was such a fresh take on the genre. The second one I kind of knew what to expect, but it was still amazing. Both were just flat out fun to watch. The whole mosquito thing was a great idea!

The concept of underground societies of vampires (or werewolves) has been done to death, but these two really took the idea and ran with it in a new and exciting way. They're barely vampire movies at all, at least not in any standard sense.

I loved how they filmed the party scene in Day Watch. Just letting the people party and starting to roll multiple cameras at once. Like they said in the behind the scenes segment it was a daring move, and one that could have totally gone wrong. But it worked out great. And the ferris wheel run amok scene put a huge smile on my face.

Overall I think both movies blow the Matrix movies out of the water.

25. I couldn't agree more, but then again
I disliked the first Matrix movie so much that I didn't bother to see any of the others. I never thought Lawrence Fishburne (I expect it from Keanu Reeves, but not Fishburne) could stink up the screen, but he sure did in that first one. The whole thing was awful.

You know, I'm not generally impressed by special effects, but there was something about Alisa driving along the side of that building that was just amazing.

I'm just hoping nobody registers at DU under the name "Geser." Who needs more endless fighting? :)

Waiting impatiently for "Twilight Watch."

28. I didn't mind the first Matrix movie.
I thought it offered some neat ideas. Not a great movie, but not bad either. Not much of a payoff though. The sequels both pretty much hugged though.

I'm like you on the special effects. Good effects won't make a bad movie good for me, no matter how well they're executed. And if a movie is fun I don't mind if the effects aren't good. I love Godzilla movies, old and new, and they're pretty cheesy, but the effects work in the context of the movie (anyone watching a G movie for the effects is missing the point anyways, but I digress). Night/Day Watch had some effects that would have seemed corny in a lesser movie, but they worked perfectly in the context they were in. The driving on the side of the Cosmo Hotel was one of them. It was just neat stuff, and worked because the story allowed it to.

The director is truly one to keep an eye on, and I see bigger things in his future (and hopefully better, but with success usually comes watered down ideas...we'll see). I read that the third one wasn't even in production yet, so we may be waiting awhile for it. Which is going to drive me crazy. :)

32. If memory serves,
I was sort of tolerating the first movie until one point near the end where the brunette is telling Neo (sitting in the chair, in danger from what was going on) something like "You have to live because I love you."

If there was any suspense in the movie up to that point (as you know, there wasn't, but work with me here ;) ), it all went down the drain right then and there. I looked at my then-girlfriend and said, verbatim (this one I do remember vividly), "Jesus Christ - who do I fucking sue?" I didn't really like what I was seeing to begin with, but to season it so heavily with corn at then end was a slap in the face and just pissed me off royally.

I'd sooner watch one of those dumbass Larry the Cable Guy movies than see any of the Matrix sequels.

27. Hello
Soon I'll have some money to spend and I'll be devoting it to three films, none of which are called Indiana Jones: Curse of the Crystal Skull. I'm not even sure if that's it's real name, although I'm quite certain.

A problem in this country that alas goes overlooked is sex trafficking. Girls are given false promises of a better life and they end up in a brothel. This movie kicks off with a young Asian girl being threatened with deportation in a police station. Unfortunately the previously installed federal government didn't give any consideration to their situation and just tosses them aside like garbage. This movie is the story concerning some of these girls.

Can't think of a good description for this one.

Based on a true story. A man, I believe an editor of some publication, incurs a stroke which leaves him almost entirely paralysed - he can only move his left eye. An inspiring movie for me in that a person shows that so much is still possible despite a compromised position.

31. Star Wars prequels were enough to put me off Lucas reliving his glory days.
And the reviews make it sound painful. I don't mind cheesy over-the-top fun, but it has to actually be fun.

Seems like there have been a bunch of unasked-for sequel of 80's movies over the last few years, Terminator, Rocky, Indiana Jones. And I think I heard something about a Lost Boys sequel in the works.

but now, i don't really care (i haven't been into summer movies for years)--they are almost always "safe" remakes or sequels or comic book/cartoon superheroes...Summer is usually a good time to check out your local indie theater
