Where does your workin' self stand on the DU 'Your Profession is Teh EEEvill' ladder?
By my estimation, if you're a politician, police officer, journalist or telemarketer, you'd best not let anyone here know it lest they shove you into a locker and run your underwear up the flagpole.

Any others? Yours, maybe?

Middle aged, bald, MBA, administrator, state employed, and I own 3 cars, two tractors, two lawnmowers, a weedwhacker, chipper shredder, DR Trimmer, generator, two guns, six figure income, no debt, and don't watch American Idol.

no idea how one gets it. So that poses the question...how does one get hired by the park service? Particularly if one has degrees in things as useless as political theory and fundraising (actually development, but most people have no idea what that is.)?

74. Hey! I do research for you guys sometimes!
I do social science research for the Park Service, and sometimes the Forest Service, depending on who's throwing research dollars my program's way at the time.

I'm a grad student, though, so my current uniform is dirtbag climber with occasional tidiness when it matters. I don't think there's a college professor uniform for after I've graduated, but I could be wrong. ;) Although one of my profs wore his old NPS uniform to a Halloween party a couple of years ago (with a Junior Ranger badge, since he'd turned his real one in) and gave a hilarious interpretive talk as part of his schtick. What can I say? We're dorks.

I was down at one of the nearby parks talking to the superintendent yesterday. I told him I felt really weird being at his park (where I recreate pretty regularly) and not looking like a total dirtbag. It felt somehow ... wrong.

Or are you instead an Apple user (making you a shameless poseur, but relatively harmless)?

I just recently got a raise landing me in the high seventies (I still can't believe they're paying me that much!) and all I have to do is make maps for natural gas pipeline routes. I may have a BA (in graphic arts) but I do drafting. I wouldn't mind seeing my writing and composition skills take off once I can get past a love for fanfic ;)

Still drafting is fun and so is ESRI ArcMap :)

Say, if any of youse guise make it to pResident one day, could you sign into law something with the stipulation that all engineers must come in to work at midnight so that when those "afternoon" crises roll around, us designers are just making it to work and will have all day to put out the fires the engineers delegate to us? :P

Actually, I did get to do some technical illustration for a couple of contractors to NASA-JSC. One illustration I worked on was for the "waste-disposal system" for the Space Shuttle, years before it was built. I'll let you figure out what that particular piece of equipment was :P

41. Hay, I've probably worked with your kind and not known it
:P

Actually, I have worked and still work with a scientist that I think has that kind of a background as we have one project that involves offshore pipelines and offloading connections. Lots to do with protected areas, historical shipwrecks, wetlands, water tables and porosity, though the latter is the expertise of the hydrologist. Still, although it looks interesting, when I have to read through that stuff to make sure we're still in the clear for our route, it kind of puts me to sleep :boring: ;)

I did propose to the president of the company the idea of grass-pave and gravel-pave blocks and surfacing to lower the cost and size of retention ponds. He liked the idea but didn't think the client would, so no go.

Some of whom have taken jobs similar to what you describe - doing wetland surveys in areas where pipelines are going in. They do a lot of delineation and hydrology type stuff. I don't really know too much about that, since i just run around looking for manders. :D

What are the retention ponds usually made of? Seems like they could be a good opportunity for wetland remediation...?

52. I have yet to see what ours will be made of,
but I have read that sometimes impermiable liners are used. However, I seem to recall that they usually use some kind of clay that is permiable over a longer amount of time than the local soils, but not impervious. The stuff I had read about having to do with grass-pavers was taking the same materials and stacking them so that you end up with a retention pond you can drive over and not know it's even there :)

55. I've read much scorn and disdain and downright hostility aimed at those who work in...
insurance. Particularly health insurance. Therefore, I can conclude that Mr. LIW is Teh Evil.

I manage a health club daycare - we babysit for the members of children while the members work out. I'm in charge of staffing and all related staffing issues, operating within tight budget constraints, and the general operations of the daycare (keeping up adequate supplies, devising a program of craft projects, inspecting and maintaining safe toys and games, and pretty much anything else that comes under the umbrella of operating the daycare and nursery). I don't know if that's evil or not. Possibly.

79. Airline worker...
I think, next to the oil & gas companies, the airlines are hated pretty severely. Maybe I just get most complaints because it's my job, but sometimes I think people really do not have enough appreciation for how difficult it is to keep an airline flying-- especially with today's rising fuel costs. :-( Believe it or not, there are some flights that go out with 100% capacity (not a single empty seat) that still barely break even.

95. No, I don't
I was due to go back next Monday after my medical leave ended. I didn't miss the job at all while I was off, and the thought of returning made me want to just heave myself out the window. I haven't decided yet what I'll do. Mr. DTBK is actively looking for a job out of state, so we might have to move at short notice when he finds something. He may be heading to Boston, which I'm not that thrilled about, and he said I could go to California if he does that (it'd be just for a while).

100. I worked as a bill collector for 2 months last year. I had to quit.
I could not STAND telling people that bills from deceased people were THEIR responsibility to pay. Unless there is an Estate established, there is absolutely no duty or requirement for spouses or other family members to pay the debts of someone deceased.

I felt like a crook, and my conscience couldn't handle it. So I quit.
