New "supergroup": Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith.
No, I'm not kidding. From an article at blabbermouth.com:

"Sammy Hagar recently started a new "supergroup" with ex-VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony, guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith. The band, tentatively called CHICKENFOOT, will enter the studio to begin recording its debut album this summer.

Hagar spoke about the project in a recent interview, explaining, "We've written eight, nine songs...When people hear the music, it's LED ZEPPELIN. It's as good as that. I know that's a mighty bold statement...We could rival ZEP." "

43. I read an interview with Jimmy Page..
...in which he said they stopped releasing new work because they found their new material was in competition with their old material and was losing.
Zepelin fans want Zep's OLD stuff-anything sounding different is no good.

Listen to Pages playing/writing with his later group The Firm to see where Zep might have gone.

Best wishes for Sammy & Friends-May not take over the radio, but I bet they will out play everyone else making music right now.

2. I'd be curious to hear that...
There's the potential for greatness... and for just the opposite.

Remember David Lee Roth's 'superband' of the 80's: Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette? Three technically skilled musicians who sounded like shite together.

But that can't happen with this group. I mean, that was clearly just DLR trying to out-gun Van Halen...

36. Michael Anthony = "Luckiest Man In Show Business"
Well...maybe his luck took a turn for the worst when the VH brothers kicked him to the curb, but Sammy's kept the steady paychecks coming.

Remember that bit in "It's A Wonderful Life" about "Every Time a Bell Rings an Angel Gets His Wings?"

It's the same with Michael Anthony, but it's "Every Time Michael Anthony Straps On His Bass, Jaco Pastorious Spins In His Grave."

At least a few songs were (like "Yankee Rose").

Other tracks were bogged down a bit by cheesy synthesizers.

8. I look forward to jeering this.
I don't mean that these guys couldn't produce good music; there are bound to be many long moments when Hagar isn't singing, for instance, and the rest of the line-up sounds great. But as good as Zep? Hmmm.

I'm reminded of reading a brief item way back when in Rolling Stone, in which John Waite was bragging about the "kick-ass rock 'n' roll band" he was forming with Journey's Neal Schon. Months later, we got the Bad English single, "When I See You Smile." Pardon me while I snicker.

Hagar sounds like a dog with laryngitis, Michael Anthony only knows 3 chords - and he's a bassist. Satriani is a great guitarist, but a horrible writer. Chad Smith - well, have the RHCP ever done anything good besides "Give it Away"?

Which actually had a different title in the beginning, heh. Reminds me of Krusty on "The Simpsons" asking the Peppers to change "What I got, you gotta get it, put it in you" to "What I want, I really wanna hug and kiss you," and them agreeing to the change. LOL

27. With a few changes, they could have a really rockin' group!
Hagar's biggest hit is a song about getting a speeding ticket, Michael Anthony can't play, Satriani specializes in guitar solos and the RHCP has what, one song anyone likes?

Just replace those four guys and you might have something worth listening to.

30. Two mediocre musicians, a clubber and Satriani (great soloist, below average songwriter)
Tell you what, I saw VH last year. Didn't miss EITHER one of the twin anchors.

The Red Hot Junkie Peppers. Holy mother of GOD if that isn't the most historically and universally ass-kissed, overrated-as-fuck-all band this side of Nirvana, Radiohead or My Morning Jacket. The worst part about them is that unlike those other three bands, they're so completely full of themselves and in love with their music press-fueled legend. Saw them live once . . . the USPS would have marvelled at how well they mailed their shit in. Kiedis (not the most talented of vocalists to begin with) looked disinterested and rather high as a kite in a bad way.

37. I can understand Satriani making this kind of move...
...his latest album ("Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock") didn't exactly get rave reviews, and he's always flirted with vocal rock, even though he can't sing to save his life (his vocal range is approximately one note).

I'm not a fan of the RHCPs and pretty much agree with your assessment. I have no idea what makes Smith "special" as a drummer, other than the fact that he obviously gets along with Hagar and Anthony.

As far as Hagar and Anthony are concerned, they're just following the template David Lee Roth initiated on his first solo album, "Eat 'Em and Smile"...

Guitar: Steve Vai (knew all of Eddie's licks, Berklee College of Music grad, cut his teeth writing transcripts of ridiculously complex Zappa pieces like "The Black Page")

Bass: Billy Sheehan (a power player, but more fluid, and a step up from Anthony's ham-fisted thumping)

Drums: Gregg Bissonette (could pretty much do anything Alex Van Halen could do, without bringing Alex's massive ego into the mix)

I'd be surprised if Hagar didn't at least give a passing thought to inviting Vai. But inviting Vai's G3 partner was the next best thing, and by including Satriani, only people like me will think he's trying to be Diamond Dave.

Satriani will get a shot in the wallet and a major negative shot to his street cred the first time he plays the Van Hagar keyboard-driven pap like "Love Walks In" and "Dreams." But we do what we have to do in order to make a buck in this world, I guess.

Seriously... a band named "Chickenfoot" ?? I mean, I know Led Zeppelin sounded like a stupid name long ago, but Chickenfoot is irredeemable. Maybe if they call it "New Coke" they can get an endorsement deal.
