I'm trying to find an old story title.

Probably science-fiction, about a society where material goods spell disaster. The idea is to live with the bare minimum, and you can damage someone by giving them a present.

I think robots, or robotic factories are involved, but it's been many years since I read it, and the details are vague.

I have googled it under everything I can think of, but I'm still drawing a blank. :shrug:

Can anyone here, help?

It couldn't be a sci-fi flavored fantasy where 'darkness' gathers around any refined metal or any device? I wouldn't mind finding out what else the author of that one has done.

any 'darkness' being involved. Just that the society was awash in material goods, and for some reason this was bad and avoided.
