Defiant FIFA boss confident of getting '6+5' quota to work

SYDNEY (AFP) - Sepp Blatter is convinced Europe will come on board and agree with his foreign player quota for club teams after an overwhelming endorsement by the FIFA Congress Friday.
The Congress gave the FIFA president and his executive committee sweeping support to explore the controversial system of six home-grown players and a maximum of five foreigners, known as 'six plus five'.

Only this week the European Commission rejected Blatter's call for a curb on the number of foreign players aimed at protecting the identity of national teams, warning it would contravene EU labour rules.

Bad news for English Premiere league teams is that they'll now have a talent drop, the good news is your national team will improve.

1. Why not put this in the sports forum?
How the hell is this guy confident? They shot it down last time, and they'll do it again.

Some of the dumbest crap ever, this drummed-up nonsense over the nationality of players.

4. Yeah, it would really suck for Arsenal.
How many English players did Arsenal start last season?

7. You're no fun today...
I even posted La Mano de Dios in DuStrange's thread and got nothing. Let's rumble!

Thierry Henry is too old to play top-level football anymore. :hide:

And yes, he's definitely too old for top-level footie... he needs to come to the MLS like Becks did. :7

That would suck... the LA match was one of the few games PHP is likely to sell out this year. x(

Plus he's so sexy. :)

24. I watched the Barca vs. United champions league game
Henry came off the bench and instantly he made an impact. He's not the same as he used to be, but he can still make it happen. I'm glad that Arsene sold him, but I do miss seeing his awesomeness on a regular basis.

26. Yeah... Arsene had to sell him...
cause he wanted to go.

No good having a player on your squad if he doesn't want to be there. That doesn't help anyone.

28. How did you feel about Henry's "I want to leave, but I'll always love Arsenal" schtick.
Honestly, I wanted him to STFU. It seemed like he was talking about his undying love everyday and at a certain point I don't need my ex-girlfriend to keep talking about how even though she wants to see other people, I'll always be her true love.

(that didn't really happen to me, but I think it's a good analogy)

29. Yeah... I dunno...
I'm fond of the guy and everything... but I was a new fan last year and hadn't formed the attachment many fans had for him... so it just didn't affect me so much. I wasn't even that worried about the team... it seemed like yeah he's great and all... but I was happy enough with Adebayor, Van Persie, and Fabregas.

30. I became a fan the year before that
The year we went to the Champions League final and he broke Ian Wright's scoring record. I remember watching the game that if we won we'd qualify for the Champions League next year and if we lost it would have been Spurs. That day Thierry scored a hat trick.

The next year I was watching the first United game at Emirates when he headed home the winner in extra time. It was about as good a regular season game as I've ever seen in any sport.

BTW, I highly recommend this Arsenal blogger's podcast today. I'm sitting in my cubicle and I laughed out loud.

And Torres... none of the top teams would be the same.

Flamini and Hleb leaving will hurt, but Cesc leaving would have been disastrous.

27. Transfers didn't really bother me last year
It was the boardroom stuff and the possibility of Henry and Wenger leaving. After Henry left and Wenger was being talked about leaving I was a wreck.

I think we're going to be fine next year, but I'd still like to see a central defender, a winger, and a striker to be bought. RvP can't be depended on for a whole season and we may or may not get Eduardo back.

31. Yeah... the stuff about Wenger leaving...
that did have me nervous.

And agreed on RvP. This is two seasons in a row now he seems to have been injured more than not. And he's injured again and can't play for Holland. I swear that guy... x(

Have you been watching the targets Arsene is reportedly tracking? I really like Ben Hasim but he seems doubtful, Nasri looks good too - but is uncertain. I think it's my paying attention that's making me nervous. I wish these guys would just make a decision already... but they're mostly all playing with their national teams and are putting it off (and waiting for other offers, too, no doubt).

I wouldn't mind having some experience so we didn't have to keep going through growing pains.
