Many residents, businesses still without water after Sunday, Monday water main breaks
by Margie Hyslop and Melissa J. Brachfeld | Staff Writers

Thousands of Montgomery County residents and businesses are without water or adequate water pressure after several mains ruptured in the Derwood and Wheaton areas on Sunday and Monday, spilling an estimated 100 million gallons of water as of noon today.

So widespread are the problems that county health officials had considered forcing restaurants to close down because of the possible health contamination, but decided not to take such action, said Mary Anderson, department spokeswoman.

Officials with the state's Department of Environmental Protection, the Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission and the county health department made the determination after deliberations Monday afternoon, Anderson reported.
