Some of my old friends have grown up to be utterly depressing.
I had one friend, when I was younger, who really struck me as kind of a free-spirited, artsy, non-conformist type of person.

I found her on facebook a bunch of years later, and she's turned out to be a somewhat boring conservative who's part of an anti-Obama smear group. Really.

Sigh.

2. Sometimes your friends are not who you think they are.
or who they're comfortable being perceived as in the eyes of the world.

One of my friends is a hardcore RW (fiscal and social) Republican and outwardly presents herself as a morally-conservative. She's actually really into having kinky anonymous trysts with strangers (men and women). Ever seen Cruel Intentions? She's Sarah Michelle Gellar's character to a tee, minus the mean-spiritedness.

Another has 90 tattoos and piercings including ones in naughty places which she talks about candidly, has a lithograph of the "Piss Christ" hanging in her living room and supplements her income as a non-nude bondage model. She is also training to be a minister and was the source of my best quip in the last week when someone got on her for her pro-gay-marriage position. "WWJD?: Cater."

A third is the mousiest, quiet, sweet, innocent-seeming girl you'll ever meet. Teaches ballet. Tells corny jokes, talks about how she wants to find a guy just like her daddy, brings me food at work "just because", cries watching Bambi every time when Bambi's mother dies and is a prolific hugger. She's also a pro-domme.

These three people are best friends to the amazement of everybody who doesn't really know them. Also, I have really strange friends and I love them just the way they are. People are complicated...uncomplicated people scare me; it means they're complicated in ways they don't feel they can share.

3. Ugh.
I had a sort-of friend/acquaintance in college who was a free-spirted super feminist. She turned into a Christian conservative wifey type. Gag.
