"The chickens are negotiable."
Mrs. Robb and I are investigating houses. We shall sign several documents and get the keys to one soon, after which apparently we will do little else that costs anything to do. :)

One we particularly like has chickens. Not an infestation or anything, but about six hens, in a little coop and pen thingy in the back yard. The couple selling the house are getting older and "downsizing" to an easier-to-deal-with home.

My wife asked, "What happens to the chickens when you move?"

The owner said "Well, the chickens are negotiable."

So.

Anyone ever keep chickens? I figure I either want them, or I want like hell for them to leave with the current owners. Nothing in between. :)

1. Do they lay eggs, or are they pets?
Or both?

If they're prolific egg-producers, keep 'em. Otherwise, they're just stinky chickens.

3. That sounds OK, I guess.
On one hand, you won't need to buy eggs. On the other, you have a bunch of chickens running around the yard that you have to feed.

I guess it depends on how much you like chickens.

4. Take them! They're fun.
Lots of my neighbors have chickens. Free eggs! And they're not much work.

5. Robb, I'm sorry. I mean, I know you really love Mrs. Robb and everything,

...but you really needed to marry LaraMN.

6. Do you have anything growing nearby that you can use to feed them for free,
Or room to plant your own stuff. I.E., small cornfield or something like that.

8. I'd rather raise scorpions!
It's not like you can hide a few chickens in your enemy's bed and claim victory.

Eggs from free range hens are nothing like store bought. They are the best! And they're already laying. What a bonus! You don't have to go to all the trouble of raising them from chicks. And they can be pretty damn entertaining at times.
