Arg health care costs!!!
So, my wife and I are trying to figure out how to insure her and my son.

I'm beginning to think it's not actually possible.

It's so insane. Through my employer my health insurance is 6 bucks a week. 6!!!!!! But to add my wife and son brings it up to 300 a week. WTF?!?!

And the cheapest plan purchased elsewhere is a thousand dollars a month. That's for the 20,000 dollar deductible plan. A decent plan, with a 2-5 thousand dollar deductible costs around 3,500 a month. That's around what our combined income is a month after taxes, so that clearly wont fly. Unless we choose not to eat and live in the park.

We've already used our one year stop-gap insurance policy option. In Maine you can get a decent insurance policy for a reasonable price for one year, as long as the insurer is allowed to exclude pre-existing conditions and deny coverage to certain people, normally not allowed. This plan costs us 900/year. Of course state law prevents us from renewing it. Grrrrr.

So my options are:
1) Pray my family doesn't get sick
2) Start selling drugs in order to pay for health insurance
3) Rob a bank
3) Stop paying taxes
4) Learn french and move to Switzerland (dual citizenship)
5) Harrass DHS and get them to authorize a renewal of our health plan for one year. Totally not legal, but they've been known to do it when children as young as ours are involved. Pray the insurance industry is nationalized in the next year, otherwise we face the same problem in a year again.
6) Start generating a false identity now, and if either my wife or son get really sick, use the false identities when registering at the hospital. Never pay the bill (which at this point, two days at the hospital is around 5 grand).
7) Move my investments to Switzerland. If my wife and son ever get sick, pretend we're poor, don't pay, declare bankruptcy. Repeat as necessary. When overseas investments are large enough, leave.

This is ridiculous.

I can't believe I'm actually considering leaving this country just so I can get health insurance.

2. Move to Switzerland.
Why would you stay? There's nothing left in this country worth staying for.

Disclaimer: my husband and I are moving to France in September. :)
