The Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel was too much for her. No hope of her visiting the Florida Keys then I guess... Outer Banks would be frightening enough.

but they apparently don't like barking dogs, and will kill them.

Here are some eyewitness reports from texas:

10. Medical procedures.
Doctors, hospitals, etc. scare the bejeebers out of me.

Heights, if there's no barrier between me and some vast abyss, e.g., Logan Pass in Glacier Park.

I used to be scared to death of flying, but I got over it using a rather drastic method: I took flying lessons.

11. Muddy bottoms
Muddy bottoms in lakes, rivers, bays, or oceans are full of phobias and should be avoided at all costs. Sandy bottoms are fine, but muddy bottoms give me the creeps!

36. I could have sat here all night
thinking about phobias and I'm sure I'd never think of that, but since you bring it up I have to agree. I'm assuming you mean when the water is dark and you can't see your feet but you sure as hell are aware of them.

I'm thinking of one lake we used to swim in when we were kids. The water had a lot of tannin in it so it was like swimming in very dark tea. Visibility was about 2 feet and the bottom felt like congealed diarrhea. Pretty unpleasant.

My best experience swimming anywhere was when I was at Lake Tahoe in the early 70's. The shore was the mountain side so the bottom dropped off very quickly. There wasn't much wading going on at that spot. If you were in the water you were swimming. The remarkable thing was how absolutely crystal clear the water was. It was more like flying than swimming. I could see the bottom in 50ft. of water like I was looking through air. The bottom was granite and sand without the slightest trace of any algae. Not a trace. It was explained to me that the water was cold enough that algae couldn't grow. Not only was it clear, but it was bright too because of the light colored bottom. The bottom was always clearly visible, and there was no way monsters could hide down there or sneak up on you.

Almost drowned in '73 in the Kaweah River.

Ever since then, I don't do deep water, and swimming in moving water (rivers, ocean) make me stay on shore.
I can go tubing, canoeing, rafting, but cannot swim in water that is moving.

33. Blood and Bugs. Well some bugs.
If there's a movie with lots of blood and gore I can't watch it. Sorry but I'd get more benefit out of Kung Fu Panda than I would out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

As for bugs - depends on what they are. Fleas and small flies are annoying and squishable. Medium sized flies are just annoying. Bees, wasps, horseflies - argh! And spiders - don't get me started on spiders!

Mark.

when I was 5 we lived in trailer park in a swamp in Louisiana...we had moved there from MN...so I was unfamiliar with the nightlife.

Got up to go to the bathroom during the night (bare foot) and as I walked I heard and felt crunch squish crunch squish...

I had no idea what I was walking on then I felt the crawling on my feet...I screamed...my mom came running, turned on the light and the floor moved... hundreds of roaches shot off in different directions

shudder
