Where else can I find Netscape 4.0x and 4.7 to download?
I'm testing a new web site for a client, where having to support 6 year old browsers is preferred.

I've gone to Netscape's own archive site. And both from at work and from home, their site times out. So I can't download it from there.

Are there alternative locations?

Thanks!!

I just confimed it's possible to log on as anonymous.

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english

On edit, it appears as if there are NO install files here after all. Sorry about that.

3. Thanks!
I first thought my dsl modem's integrated firewall had gone crackers again, as I couldn't access SuSE's ftp site to download the new 2.4.21-192 Athlon kernel, as well as the aforementioned Netscape archive site where it kept timing out as well... but that ftp site you'd mentioned is getting me to where I want to go today. :D

Thx!

2. Forget netscape.
It's worthless and doesnt read HTML correctly.

Get mozilla firefox if you want a good non-ms browser.

4. I'd prefer to support older browsers
Or at least test them on a bunch of news websites to see if they blow up as well.

Even books written in late 2003 about web design say site developers should design for as many browser types as possible, even using indexed 216 color palettes and using a 640x480 resolution :puke: :puke: !

Given my particular client, many people who have home computers likely have old ones still using Win95 :puke: and Netscape 4...

What I should do is get some usage tracking software and see who goes where using what...

I'll be able to test Linux and Windows, but I might not be able to test Mac as I can't afford a Mac and emulators can't do OS X...

6. I don't have the link on me but I'd read yesterday
that there are subtle differences between pure mozilla and Netscape; one feature of which is the usability of png graphics... but there were other sundry things...

8. Buy some old garage sale or thrift shop computers....
I'll bet you will get not only Nutscrape 4.0, but even WinDoz 3.1 and AOL 2.1, too....

and maybe some .gif's of somebody's wife....

People are so dumb when it comes to ditching old computers!

9. I feel your pain
but, hell, even Microsoft doesn't support their own version 4 browser on their own site!

I hate archiac web policies, I wish managers like that would just get with the times :eyes:

Good luck finding what you need, I'm just registering my feelings towards that asinine rule.

11. Well, the page I've designed is 90% okay
Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 11:25 AM by HypnoToad
The marquee won't work in NS 4 and the top black bar won't display either. :eyes: It's ridiculous...

But I did use Frontpage 2000 to create the basic table structure (and using other means to add in the text, to eliminate redundant font and paragraph tags...). That could be the issue right there, at least for table layout... the marquee issue is another one

I don't have the funds to get Dreamweaver.

But FirstPage 2000 might be enough...

I suppose I should try to learn CSS and use it for lining up graphics instead of making big tables and embedding graphics in them... shouldn't have to, you'd think that the tables would be the most universal feature of them all...

12. I personally don't follow it
My own personal website requires a newer browser (IE5 and NS 6 do work with it).

It is silly to have to support 6 year old browsers, I agree...

10. If you can't find it -
Let me know. I can drop a cd in the mail to you. We give our customers Netscape 4.79 as setup discs when they sign up for internet. (I end up switiching a LOT of them to Moz later on, and we'd rather give out Moz, but there is no way to make a cd that installs itself and creates DUN connections yet.)

Anyway, I could easily mail one to you, if needed.
