I saved a Turtle from certain death a minute ago
I was on my way home for lunch, when much to my surprise, I spotted a huge turtle walking across the road. This is a semi-busy road, with cars, trucks and semi's going by all the time. I know in my heart of hearts that many of these travelers have rage, anger, and maybe even murder in their hearts. This was not a time for thought - it was a time for action!

I stopped my car in the lane I was in with the flashers on, walked out, picked up the turtle and carried him to the edge of the road where he could disappear into some trees. I also survived to tell this harrowing tale, and feel pretty good about the outcome. Now time to return to work .

Any other tales of great heroism amongst my fellow DU'ers?

2. YAY!!!
I love turtles. I had five of them as a kid...all named Yertle, except for the last one, named Max.

:)

Very cool.

25. what made him different
Was that I had him the same time I had Yertle IV.

You can't go around having TWO turtles named Yertle, now.

That's just CRAZY!

:)

3. A little good karma goes a long way....
no tales of heroism
we just have this huge gray cat that came up the drive way one night and he's been here ever since....
I think he digs the liberal discussion.

5. I nearly lost a finger
trying to help out a burly snapper in the same way. Ended up sort of just kicking him across the road, which may not seem very nice, but at least he avoided smooshing!

awfully cute when they're little! And nasty as they are when they're full-grown and weigh a couple hundred pounds, I still couldn't bring myself to make soup out of one.

10. We saved a mouse
two weeks ago. A fellow tenant dumped out some white mice, for whatever dumb reason, and I got the last one not picked off by the feral cats.
He is now well fed and running around his fish tank.

11. good job
I've done the same thing several times. Many years ago when I was driving I swerved to miss a turtle that was crossing the road, but the inattentive driver behind me didn't see it and it went CRACK! Ever since I've always stopped to help turtles cross the road.

20. Ummm, hate to tell you this...
but turtles often climb up onto raods to warm their bodies so they can LIVE.

So, now, there's probably some turtle shivering his ass off, thinking it's going to take him until tomorrow to get back to the road.

Let nature takes its course.

21. we have a turtle feeding station in our backyard
complete with a bathtub; we have had about 12 different ones stop by this year, with about 3 or 4 regular customers. They are wonderful. I recently inherited a box turtle as a pet, too

22. Just so long as it was not the post turtle....

When I was in Kansas, we rescued them all the time.. I guess they were attracted by the heated asphalt, but sometimes there would be a "herd" of them, so we would stop and move them to the other side..

In Calif, NOTHING makes it across the roads:(.. and the desert tortoises are almost gone too :(

36. The channel behind my house
is full of turtles and toads , and I love them one and all. I leave about two feet of lawn unmowed for them to have a "safety zone"

yesterday I removed three spders form my house (in a paper cup) and put them in the flower garden, does that count?

That big ole lazy cat lying at my feet was a stray one upon a time, but you wouldn't dare tell HER that

otherwise they will turn around and head straight back into the danger area!
