IMAGE/PERCEPTION is EVERYTHING. Not that they might not be *kind* or whatever to their animals, but there is no real appreciation of their intrinsic value.

I have a daughter who looks at things like this. Doesn't see any *value* ~ doesn't understand 'intrinsic worth'. It's a huge FAIL for humanity, herself, and me as a parent.

57. As a former freeper myself
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 12:51 PM by kdsusa
I can attest that being an "animal person" has nothing to do with party. I've gone from being registered independent, to republican, to eager to elect Obama, and I have always had cats, and we cherish them as part of the family. My change in politics hasn't altered my love of animals.

My wife (still a freeper, but I'm working on her) is the most dedicated cat lover I've ever known.

Having said that, I think it's also true that those who are malicious toward animals probably lean more to the right.

Edit: We wrote our will last year. My wife insisted that a large chunk go to the local Animal Shelter. (don't get excited, shelter staff. "Large chunk" is a relative term. But it'll do some good, just the same).

how much they like/don't like animals. One doesn't care for them (doesn't hate them, just wouldn't have one) and one has a dog and a cat whom she loves.

So there you have it! A completely pointless answer!

11. My observation: They tend to be dog people more than cat people.
Liberals tend to like cats more than conservatives. The rightwingers aren't secure enough with themselves to have an animal that doesn't fawn at their feet. ... I know, I know ... plenty o' exceptions ... Lots of great liberal dog people, etc. It's just my sweeping stereotype.

sure they have pets, plenty of them have hunting dogs, pit bulls, cats, pretty much the full run of traditional pets

i mean they might not think outside the box and have a tarantula as a pet but they surely have pets

the cat theory is nonsense, i had a republican friend who was a cat "collector" before he got control of his problem and put the brakes on taking in more and more cats, the addiction to cats is nothing to do with party or politics

While Americans unite to protect a dog, they are tragically indifferent to the damage caused by hunger, crime, disease, war. We convince ourselves that the dog is helpless while human victims control their destiny with free will.

Where my boss lives (intense Rethug neighborhood) there are a couple of Pit Bulls, Dobermans, a couple of unfriendly BullMastiffs, and one nasty Shepard. How do I know this? I have cleaned their computers up over the last couple of years. And none of them have a clue about computer security either. And they are also big on porn. (That is for another thread).

Most of the dogs are big robust dogs, lots of dobies, mastiffs, pit bulls, shepards, bulldogs, etc. My district has 26 total registered republicans, and *none* of them are the people that own the big dogs!

*edited to add - there were 287 registered democrats in the same district. All of the other sdistricts in my neighborhood are about the same, though there's 2 that only have 2 registered repugs each.

42. Some are, in a very weird way.
In my circles, I notice a lot of rethugs who do indeed keep animals and seem to care for them - I say "seem to," because I find it hard to wrap my mind around the contradiction - in that they don't seem to give a damn about the similar species living in the wild, or wilderness in general. As long as they've "got theirs," they don't want to see any protection for animals, whether wild or domestic.

Do they not give a shit about people living on the street or starving in another country, as long as their people are okay too?

I suspect that may be the case, in which case their feelings towards their animals are perfectly consistant with their feelings towards people too.

My vet is one of us, has passed on animal advice to other DUers. I always say to him that liberals love animals. I told her about DU, and when I said to her that liberals love animals, she replied that Republicans love money...

70. true love maybe yes :D like of all animals.
I don't wanna get into this flamin' but I do think really connecting with animals' souls means someone has a deeper connection to nature.. which doesn't seem to mean much to earth-raping, God-will-save-us types. But I have two repubs in my family who are also animal lovers.

Also my motherinlaw, who's always been a Democrat, is not as into animals as I am, she only has a cat because she ended up with one of ours when my husband and I were moving around.
And she really doesn't agree with my feeling for animals. She brought her friends over to see my gardens once and they giggled eye-rollingly at my wildlife sign and my bat houses.

67. I've noticed nothing of the sort. Obama doesn't have pets, what does THAT mean?
Nothing.

71. No, I haven't.
I've known Republicans who have, care for and love their pets. I've known Democrats with no pets, or who don't take good care of their pets.

And visa versa.

81. Yup
Liberals like cats more because liberals are lazy, and do not want the commitment of having a dog. Cats are easier pets.

See I can be judgmental and stereotypical too.

78. Um....no
My friend Jim is a Republican. When his dog died (of old age) he was devastated.

I'm sorry, Republicans are people, just like Democrats. They may not share the same belief about politics, but I'm sure most of them love and care for their furry friends just as we do.

83. In poll of pet owners, McCain tops Obama

personally, I've observed that animal lovers come from all political leanings.

maybe there's some personality distinctions between what kind of personalities are favored by liberals and conservatives.
