BREAKING: Favre traded to Jets
The Brett Favre era is officially over in Green Bay.

The Green Bay Packers have confirmed they have traded the quarterback to the New York Jets. Favre had started the past 253 consecutive games for the Green Bay Packers.

3. I don't think about football at all
But, according to some here, Favre transcends sport.

So I figured this was Big News.

10. To be frank, my interest in football has been waning for years...
It started the year I realized I was older that any NFL player. Who was the kicker who up and retired that was older than me? Ray Wersching?

11. Ray Wersching, who looked more like a bartender
than a football player.

Not that place kickers are actually "football players."

Dude had a helluva foot on him, though. Not so much for distance, if I recall correctly, but for accuracy.

I can't pinpoint exactly or even vaguely when football and I broke up. I was a big-time Rams fan when they were in LA, so the 1980 Super Bowl left me feeling quite forlorn — especially since they were fucking ahead at the half. :grr:

I dunno — at some point after that, the game just started to seem silly.

13. Ray Wersching had a real day job, he was a genuine practicing CPA
Ray's secret to kicking was to NEVER look up. It was really disconcerting because he would never so much as even peek at the goalposts prior to the kick. Weird.

To get his spot, he'd grab onto the shoulder of his holder. (Who was that? Montana?)

I knew he had a regular job, but I didn't know what it was.

Didn't know this, either: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/23/BAGL1HSOD51.DTL

19. They still play baseball?
How quaint. I had a dream the MLB disbanded, but now I believe that was just a Star Trek episode.

27. Hehe. Nah, it's a famous Star Trek: TNG scene.
I've forgotten the setting, but Picard talks about his love of baseball, and mentions the last game ever played.

But, man, I can't even imagine Picard being into baseball.

33. I don't think that was TNG
I'm pretty sure that was Deep Space 9. Commander Sisko was a big fan of the "antique" sport of baseball. The topic of the last World Series came up when the plucky crew encountered mind reading/shape shifting aliens, and one of them took the form of Sisko's hero, a player for the "old" London Monarchs team.

Going back to my nerd den now.

48. Pretty sure it's Picard.
One of the writers for both shows was a baseball fan, and worked it into several shows before Sisko.

Googling around, I can't find the specific speech, but there are references to TNG's third season, an episode called "Evolutions," having a speech about the end of professional baseball. Maybe that's it. I remember Picard sitting down, talking about the three great hitters of baseball--Babe Ruth, Saduharu Oh, and some fictional player. I thought he even said he was at the last game, but I must have misremembered that, since according to all the geek sources, baseball supposedly ended 200 years before Star Trek.

34. Apparently, most people in Green Bay are not happy with him
I saw an article in the online Milwaukee J-S - in everywhere but the Milwaukee suburbs, Packer fans are pissed about what Brett is doing.

However, that doesn't stop the Favre Cult who care more about a player than the team.

Mostly I think the hullabaloo is kind of funny and I can't believe how personal people are taking it. But, that being said, it will be weird after all these years seeing him play for another team.

29. i can not wait! until brett chucks that first pass up for grabs! to anyone that can catch it!
brett is an equal opportunity quarterback. hell, he'll throw a pass up into any gathering of football players, regardless of what uniform they are wearing.

i love brett. half the time (maybe more) when he tosses a pass (who knows who will catch it) the possession changes. it makes for a lively game. lots of turnovers. and isn't that what football is all about? a lively game?

i love brett.

he crazy!

39. If Brett can learn the new offense quicly enough, this could make the Jets
a team to watch. They spent a fortune in the off season to try and upgrade their team. If all the pieces come together, they could give the Pats a run for their money. On the other hand, they could end up being the AFC version of the free spending Washington Redskins.
