Does anyone miss the late 20th Century?

4. I sometimes miss the Cold War

The old, classic Cold War with the Soviets as the distinct bad guys, and definite right/wrong. Though becoming aware of the world as a young boy in the 1980s, I eventually started to question it... now I speak a little Russian, and admire the administration of Milwaukee's great socialist mayor Daniel W. Hoan. But American socialism was always different from Soviet communism. And I digress.

In some ways I miss the 20th C., but I wouldn't be me without it. So, no?

2. What I miss is the '70s;

7. Not sad at all

I graduated from High School in 72 and had the time of my life in the late 60's and into the 70's. In fact, my girlfriend and I invented oral sex at a drive in movie in Fayetteville Arkansas the summer of 71. I was a great time for me.

9. Nothing wrong with the 70's

Great music (I discount disco as a flash in the pan and resent the fact that people associate it with the 70's), great drugs, guilt-free sex, and you could hitchhike all over the country and actually get a ride.

14. I never thought I would, but I do

The clothes and everything else was pretty tacky, but I miss the way life was back then (I was a kid then, so I'm sure my views are a little distorted). Not much TV, news wasn't sensationalized anywhere near what it is today, the country WAS more united, and people seemed to maintain closer relationships and value things like original thought and reason.

16. See, that's the thing: It was so unabashedly, cheerfully cheesey,

the cheesiness seems kinda cute now. I sure don't remember liking disco at the time, but now when one of 'those' songs comes on my fogey - ahem, Classic - rock stations, I turn the volume right up.:blush:

5. I sometimes wish I was born in the later 1940s or early 1950s

I have an affinity for old technology and would loved to have a programming career in the 1960s/1970s. Also, it would have meant I could have had a shot at working on the Apollo program. Actually, I really dig atomic age and Eames school design so I think I would have felt at home in that era. Plus the post-war era saw a brief respite in this country's rampant anti-intellectualism and extreme religiosity. But then I think about the rigid social structure, the overwhelming conformist attitudes, just-out-of-the-stone-age medicine, the thick pall of cigarette smoke that was everywhere (judging by the movies and TV news reporting of that era) and I think I'm absolutely delusional that I would have been happy living in that time.

12. I really miss the early 1960s.

When I was very young, and when all the hip atomic age, Eames school, populuxe culture you're talking about hit a peak, and the culture in general began to uproot and churn and give way to the messy, gliddy-glop gloopy turmoil of the Revolution(s). I miss those days. I miss the danger and risk and freedom rampant everywhere in America.

Ah, don't we all yearn for that simpler, less hectic time when one could hurl sharp pointy metal darts at their siblings? ;-)

I actually would have liked to have been born in the 1950s or 60s or even in the 1940s. I think the last fifty years of the 20th century were interesting and great in almost everything
