Anyone know a good latin motto to adopt. I was thinking of: vidi, vici, veni

3. I read that as a rather foreboding statement. Was this a Catholic or Lutheran school?
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 01:53 PM by JVS
I guess one could view it as saying that the students who go through the school are the glory of the world (i.e. really great)

On the other hand, I can't help but think that this phrase originated in a context where the very impermanence and perishable nature of "the world" as opposed to "the divine and eternal" was being emphasized.

5. You're right
The true meaning is "worldly things are fleeting"

which I don't think is an entirely untrue statement.

I think her class chose the meaning of "look at how great we are." It wasn't a religious school.

19. Cucullus non facit monachum.
Feste's protestation to Olivia that just because he's dressed up as a Fool doesn't make him an idiot. Literally it means, "a cowl doesn't make a monk," or as the fool restates it, "I wear not motley in my brain."

I can't vouch for the quality of the Latin.

but apparently it should really be "Noli nothis permittere te terere."

Evidently my 2 years of high school Latin improved my SAT scores, but didn't enable me to realize that my high school motto was fake Latin!

A cappella - In church
