Our fridge just died. (And tried to take all of us with it.)
We came home tonight after a day at work and then an evening spent listening to some incredible Blues guitar by at the Savannah Jazz Festival.

Opened the door....whew!!!!!

:wtf:

:puke:

:scared:

Chemically, strong abrasive odor was pervasive.

We searched and sniffed around.

I was standing by the fridge when I heard a brief buzz/hiss.

Then I saw a cloud.

Then the stench suddenly got more over powering.

Especially since I had my face down by the crack between the fridge and the wall.

The fridge got unplugged and then keel-hauled into the garage. We figured maybe we could get another day or two out of it. But there was no way to live with that smell.

Plugging into the garage blew the master breaker.

So we are in search of a fridge.

We'll have to go to one of the ripoff rental places at least at first.

Or maybe I'll find a miracle on craigslist. :D

Oh and I think I've since found out that Freon isn't really toxic to humans.

If that's even what it was.

It was nasty.

I can tell you that.

1. We found a pretty good fridge on craigslist.
$200, water/ice in the door. Good luck!

7. It is funny how those things work out, isn't.
You think you are going to have some "extra" money. Then the car/appliance breaks down or the kid/pet gets sick...but then the money was there to take care of it...so how can you really complain?

6. You might find a good used appliance place in your area.
My folks got a washer/dryer for 250, in very good condition at a local store.

Craigslist has some good bargains, so you may find your miracle. People are in real need of money.

Good luck!

8. Yeah. That's what I'm hoping.
Right now we are trying to salvage the food.

Got it on ice.

Probably give a lot away to neighbors tomorrow morning.

Better than it rotting.

16. A friend has a spare (from their porch)
:D

that we can use until we can find something better.

Hey...in this situation...it doesn't have to be pretty so long as the milk is cold.

9. Freaky.
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 10:58 PM by Jamastiene
I just went three months without one waiting on the sorry ass repairman, that I called Sir Fix Not A Lot. Lowe's finally replaced mine. It was only 4 years old.

:wtf: is up with all these refrigerators dying and damn near killing us like this? I'll bet all their coolant systems were made during a lower quality inspection time, unregulated, or some crap like that. There will probably be a massive fridge recall shortly. What are the odds that the night crew on the DU Lounge would have at least three (UPDATED: 4) people with killer refrigerators this close together like that?

I cannot type tonight. I am still recovering from my horrifying ordeal with my refrigerator. It's gotta be a conspiracy or sorry workmanship in China or an outright terruhist plot to kill all Americans by food poisoning or Freon induced brain damage. They all want us as stupid as Chimpy. I just know it.

As well as someone else?

That is weird.

Because I've never heard of this.

I just take comfort from what I read that Freon isn't actually toxiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

12. It's probably not good to sniff, like glue is, but
I hear it'll give you freezer burn though. :P

17. Sorry about fridge and glad you're okay. Freon is poisonous...
Every so often you read of kids who die from sniffing freon. Just a quick internet search shows:

"FREON - A refrigerant is a chemical that makes things cold. This article discusses poisoning from sniffing or swallowing such chemicals.

The most common poisoning occurs when people intentionally sniff a type of refrigerant called freon.

Alternative Names
Coolant poisoning; Freon poisoning; Fluorinated hydrocarbon poisoning; Sudden sniffing death syndrome"

20. I think it is only really dangerous when concentrated and intentionally huffed.
It was an unbelievable stench, though.

18. One night I came home and I smelled the distinct and potent odor of a dead grebe
NOT GOOD.

I learned well the simple lesson of keeping dead grebes in a dying freezer:

Don't put dead grebes in a dying freezer. x(

22. Try scratch 'n dent appliances
some stores set these aside and sell them for a much lower price. We got a couple of appliances that way.

23. I was going to say the same thing.
I bought my freezer at a scratch and dent store. It has worked excellent and was only a quarter of the price of freezers at Sears, etc. It has a dent, but you have to get on the floor looking up and shine a light on it to be able to see it. That is how small the dent is. I couldn't believe it.

They have great prices.
