Hundreds of dead squid washing up on Oregon beaches
CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) -- Hundreds of Humboldt squid that apparently ventured too far north in search of food have washed up on northern Oregon beaches in a rare die-off.

The squid, about 3 1/2 feet long, have been reported as far south as Cannon Beach, although most deaths were reported in the Columbia River at Astoria.

The Aberdeen Daily World reported the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department temporarily lifted its five-squid daily limit.

The squid are normally found in Southern California and Mexico, but come north in search of bait fish such as herring.

The last sizable die-off of Humboldt squid on Oregon beaches was in 2004 when about 2,000 died.

5. so this Humboldt Squid walks into a bar on the Oregon coast...
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 06:27 PM by Tom Kitten
It sits on a stool at the counter and orders a beer. The bartender, nervous, serves him. After awhile, he finally gets up the courage to say to the squid, "You know, we don't see many of your type around here."

The squid replies, "Well, at five dollars a pint I can see why."
